How to Get More Instagram Followers the Organic Way
A practical, white-hat plan built on what Instagram has published about Search, recommendations and Insights. No bots, no bought followers.
In short: get found in Search with a clear name, handle and keyword-rich bio; post original, vertical Reels of 3 minutes or less that stay within Instagram’s Recommendation Guidelines; collaborate with relevant accounts; post on a schedule you can keep; and use Insights to repeat what brings followers. Don’t buy followers or use followers apps: Instagram says it may remove that engagement, limit the account or disable it.

The honest answer first
Independent guide. Viral In City is an independent social media agency. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Instagram or Meta. Every rule quoted below comes from Instagram’s or Meta’s own Help Center or official blog, linked so you can check it at the source. Platforms change features often, so confirm details on the linked pages.
There is no button, hack or paid shortcut that safely adds real followers. People follow an account when they see something they want more of, usually after a Reel, post or profile visit reaches them through Search, Explore, Reels or a friend’s share. So the work is simple to describe and hard to do consistently: be easy to find, post content that is worth recommending to people who don’t follow you yet, and give every visitor a clear reason to tap Follow.
This guide covers that work step by step, using what Instagram itself has published about Search, recommendations and Insights. It also explains why buying followers, using “free followers” apps or joining engagement schemes is a bad trade: Instagram says it can remove that engagement, limit your account or disable it.
We don’t quote “average follower growth” numbers here, because there is no reliable public figure that applies to every niche, country and account size. Your own Insights are the only growth numbers that matter for your account.
Never buy followers, likes or bots
Buying followers is the most common mistake we see when we audit accounts, and Instagram is unusually direct about it:
- Its Help Center page on why you should not use apps that offer likes and followers says these services are not affiliated with or endorsed by Instagram. If you give them your login details they can gain complete access to your account, including your messages.
- The same page says accounts that generate inauthentic activity go against Instagram’s Community Standards. Instagram may remove likes or other engagement those apps generated, may limit parts of accounts that keep using them, and says an account using these apps to gain likes or followers may be disabled or terminated.
- Meta’s Community Standards on inauthentic behavior set out the wider rules against misleading people about the popularity of content or accounts and against artificially boosting distribution.
- Instagram has also published how it removes inauthentic likes, follows and comments from accounts that use third-party apps to boost their popularity.
Even when a purchased follower package isn’t caught, it works against you. Fake or uninterested followers don’t watch, like, save or share, so your engagement rate falls and your Insights stop telling you what real people want. Brands and partners who check engagement will notice too. You can see this effect yourself with our free Instagram engagement rate calculator.
If you already bought followers or used a followers app: stop, change your Instagram password, and remove any connected apps you don’t recognise. Instagram’s page above recommends changing your password if you shared it. If you think your account was taken over, see our hacked Instagram account recovery guide.
Step 1: Make your profile easy to find in Search
In its post Breaking Down How Instagram Search Works, Instagram says the text you type is by far the most important Search signal, and that it matches searches against usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places. Its own best practices are:
- Use a fitting handle and profile name. If people know you by a name, include it. A bakery in Pune is easier to find as “Asha’s Bakes | Pune Cakes” than as a nickname nobody would search.
- Put relevant keywords and your location in your bio. Say who you are, what you do and, for local businesses, where you are.
- Put keywords and hashtags in the caption, not the comments. Instagram says that is where they count for Search.
The same post says accounts that post spam or break the guidelines may appear lower in Search. Clean, honest profiles win here.

Step 2: Give visitors a reason to follow
Once someone lands on your profile, they decide in seconds. Check yours like a stranger would:
- Profile photo: a clear face or logo that is readable at small sizes.
- Bio: one line on what you post or offer, one line on who it is for, and a call to action such as “Weekly Reels on home workouts” or “Order on WhatsApp”.
- Link: point it to one useful page, not a cluttered list.
- Highlights: pin the Stories new visitors need, such as menu, prices, reviews or FAQs.
- First 9 to 12 posts: they should show your best, most typical content. If someone followed today, is this what they would get?
Instagram’s business help suggests similar trust signals: a clear bio, behind-the-scenes Stories and encouraging customers to tag you (Instagram Help).
Turn your Highlights into a menu for new visitors: our Instagram highlight covers guide shows how.

Step 3: Make content Instagram can recommend
Most new followers come from people who don’t follow you yet, which means recommendations. Instagram’s creator post What Creators Need to Know About Instagram Recommendations lists what matters:
- Stay eligible. Content that breaks Instagram’s Recommendation Guidelines can still reach followers but is not recommended to non-followers. Repeated issues can make the whole account ineligible for a period. Professional accounts can check this in Account Status.
- Be public. Instagram only recommends content from public accounts. Creator and business accounts are public automatically.
- Post original content. Avoid re-uploading Reels already on Instagram or posting aggregated content. Use Collabs when working with another creator.
- Make Reels for full-screen vertical viewing, without borders, watermarks or blurry recycled clips, and hook viewers early.
- Keep Reels you want recommended to 3 minutes or less. Instagram’s help page on recording a reel says Reels can be up to 20 minutes, but Reels over 3 minutes won’t be recommended to new audiences.
Instagram also says it looks at signals such as how many people, and how quickly, like, comment, share and save a post. You can’t control those directly, but you can make content people want to send to a friend or save for later: tutorials, checklists, before-and-afters, local recommendations and honest opinions.
Stuck for ideas? Our Reels and Shorts ideas generator gives niche-specific hooks, and our guide to Reels reach goes deeper on hooks, length and originality.
If reach suddenly drops, read our guide to what Instagram says about shadowbans before changing everything.
Step 4: Use captions and hashtags properly
Captions do two jobs: they help Search understand the post and they give viewers a reason to engage. Write the first line as a hook, add context or the key takeaway, then a simple prompt such as “Save this for your next trip”.
Use a few relevant hashtags that describe the post rather than long lists of popular tags. Hashtags help people find topics in Search, but they don’t replace good content. Our caption generator and hashtag generator give you starting points to edit in your own voice.
For a step-by-step method, see how to choose the best hashtags for Instagram Reels.
Before posting, run the caption through our Instagram caption formatter to tidy line breaks and keep to 5 hashtags.
Step 5: Borrow audiences the right way: Collabs and partners
Collaboration is the fastest legitimate way to reach new people. Instagram’s collab posts let you co-author a post with another account. If they accept, the post appears on both profiles and is distributed to both sets of followers.
Good partners share your audience but don’t compete with you: a café and a local bakery, a physiotherapist and a running club, a SaaS founder and a newsletter writer. Plan one useful post together rather than a shout-out swap.
Avoid “follow for follow” groups and engagement pods. They inflate numbers with people who aren’t interested in your content, which hurts the signals described above.
Step-by-step instructions, the 5-collaborator limit and who owns the post are in our Instagram collab posts guide.
Step 6: Post consistently and use Stories for loyalty
Instagram doesn’t publish an ideal posting frequency, so pick a schedule you can keep for months. Start with a number you can sustain, for example two Reels a week plus regular Stories, and adjust based on your Insights. Consistency matters more than volume, because each post is another chance to be recommended.
Stories mostly reach existing followers. Use them to keep followers engaged with polls, questions, behind-the-scenes clips and replies to DMs. Engaged followers are more likely to share your posts with friends.
Plan a month at a time with our free content calendar generator, and check our guide to finding your best time to post for using your own audience data.

Step 7: Measure what actually brings followers
Instagram’s insights are free for public accounts. Check these every week:
| Insight | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Views and viewers (followers vs non-followers) | Whether your content reaches new people or only existing followers |
| New followers / Total followers | Growth, losses, top locations, age range and most active times (needs at least 100 followers) |
| Interactions per post or Reel | Which formats and topics people like, comment on, save and share |
| Profile activity | Whether visitors tap your link or contact buttons after visiting |
Metric names follow Instagram Help at the time of writing and may change in the app.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to buy Instagram followers?
No. Instagram says apps that offer likes and followers are not affiliated with it, can take over your account if you share your login, and that accounts using them may have engagement removed, features limited, or be disabled or terminated.
How long does it take to grow on Instagram?
There is no reliable universal timeline. Growth depends on your niche, content quality, posting consistency and whether your Reels are recommended to non-followers. Track new followers in Insights for a few months to see your own trend.
Do hashtags still help you get followers?
Instagram says Search matches text in captions and hashtags, so a few relevant hashtags in the caption can help people find posts. They don’t replace original, engaging content.
Why are my Reels not reaching non-followers?
Common reasons include content that goes against the Recommendation Guidelines, unoriginal or watermarked clips, a private account, or Reels over 3 minutes, which Instagram says won’t be recommended to new audiences. Professional accounts can check Account Status.
Do follow-for-follow and engagement pods work?
They inflate numbers with people who aren’t interested in your content. That lowers your real engagement and can conflict with Instagram’s rules on inauthentic activity, so we don’t recommend them.
Can Viral In City guarantee a number of followers?
No honest agency can guarantee follower numbers. We can plan, create and publish consistent original content, optimise your profile and report on results from your own Insights.
