Instagram Business vs Creator Account

What a professional account gives you, the real differences between business and creator, and how to switch, from Instagram’s and Meta’s Help Centres.

In short: business and creator are both professional accounts with a dashboard, Insights, ads, a Contact button and a category label. Instagram recommends business accounts for shops, local businesses, brands and service providers, and creator accounts for public figures, content producers, artists and influencers. Meta says certain business accounts can’t use the licensed music library (use Meta Sound Collection instead). Professional accounts can’t be private, and you can switch types at any time.

Business vs creator account: the short version

Independent guide. Viral In City is an independent social media agency. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Instagram or Meta. Every rule quoted below comes from Instagram’s or Meta’s own Help Center or official blog, linked so you can check it at the source. Platforms change features often, so confirm details on the linked pages.

Both are professional accounts. Instagram’s Help Centre says business accounts are best for retailers, local businesses, brands, organisations and service providers, and creator accounts are best for public figures, content producers, artists and influencers. Either one gives you tools to grow, monetise, create ads, understand your growth and manage messages (About professional accounts on Instagram).

You can switch between business and creator, or back to personal, at any time (Set up a professional account).

What every professional account gets

Instagram lists these features for professional accounts, whether business or creator (About professional accounts on Instagram):

  • Professional dashboard: track performance and find professional tools.
  • Ads: run ads from your account and use Meta tools for ads on Instagram and Facebook.
  • Contact information: a Contact button near the top of your profile with directions, phone number and email.
  • Category label under your profile image, which you can show or hide.
  • Insights on who your followers are, when they’re online and how each post performs.
  • Secondary inbox with Primary, General and Requests folders, and ranked requests.
  • Manage followers: review potential spam follower requests and remove suspected spam and bot accounts.
  • Improved discovery: your posts and reels may appear in search engine results (you can turn this off).

The trade-offs: professional accounts can’t be private, and switching makes a private account public and accepts all pending follow requests. If you link a Facebook Page, you can only share Instagram posts to Facebook through that Page.

The music difference that matters for businesses

Meta’s Business Help Centre says the music in Instagram’s licensed library is intended for personal, non-commercial use, so certain business accounts and certain types of posts don’t have access to it. Licensed music may also be unavailable in some countries (Access to the licensed music library on Instagram).

Accounts without access can use Meta Sound Collection: over 14,000 royalty-free songs and sounds that Meta says are safe to use in Reels and Stories, including for commercial purposes such as ads. Find it under Audio in the Reels camera or the music sticker in Stories.

Don’t switch to creator just to get trending songs for brand promotion. The library is for non-commercial use whatever the account type, and Meta’s restrictions exist to keep licensed music out of commercial posts. A business promoting its products should use Sound Collection or music it has licensed.

How to switch to a professional account

  1. Go to your profile and tap More (the menu) to open Settings and activity.
  2. Under For professionals, tap Account type and tools.
  3. Tap Switch to professional account and select a category that describes what you do.
  4. Choose Creator or Business and tap Next.
  5. Add contact details (or tap Don’t use my contact info) and optionally connect a Facebook Page.

On instagram.com: More > Settings > under For professionals, Account type and tools > Switch to professional account (Instagram Help).

How to switch between business and creator (or back to personal)

Business ↔ creator in the app: Profile > More > Account type and tools > Account type, then choose the type you want. On instagram.com: More > Settings > Creator (or Business) tools and controls > Switch account type (Instagram Help).

Back to personal: Profile > More > Account type and tools > Account type > Switch account type > Switch to personal account (Switch back to a personal account). Instagram warns you’ll lose access to ads and some Meta business tools such as Meta Business Suite and Ads Manager, and any connected Facebook Page will be disconnected. Public accounts keep the dashboard and insights.

Monetization: does account type matter?

Instagram’s monetization features ask for a professional account, not a specific type. For example, Subscriptions require a professional account with at least 10,000 followers (and you must be 18+) (Subscriptions eligibility), and Gifts need a professional account plus other requirements (Instagram Gifts). Selling through Instagram’s commerce features also requires a professional account that meets Meta’s commerce eligibility rules (Commerce eligibility requirements).

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a business and a creator account on Instagram?

Both are professional accounts with a dashboard, Insights, ads and contact options. Instagram recommends business accounts for retailers, local businesses, brands, organisations and service providers, and creator accounts for public figures, content producers, artists and influencers. Meta also says certain business accounts don’t have access to the licensed music library.

Should a business use a creator account?

Instagram recommends a business account for businesses. Switching to creator to use licensed music for promotion doesn’t change the rule that the library is for non-commercial use; businesses should use Meta Sound Collection or licensed music.

Can I switch between creator and business accounts?

Yes, at any time: Profile > More > Account type and tools > Account type.

Can a professional Instagram account be private?

No. Professional accounts can’t be set to private, and switching makes a private account public and accepts pending follow requests.

Do I lose followers if I switch to a business account?

Instagram doesn’t say switching removes followers. Switching does make a private account public and accepts pending follow requests.

What happens if I switch back to a personal account?

You lose access to ads and some Meta business tools like Meta Business Suite and Ads Manager, and any connected Facebook Page is disconnected. Public accounts keep the dashboard and insights.

Why can’t my business account use popular songs?

Meta says the licensed music library is for personal, non-commercial use, so certain business accounts don’t have access. Use Meta Sound Collection, which is royalty-free and cleared for commercial use.

Do I need a creator account to make money on Instagram?

No. Features such as Subscriptions and Gifts ask for a professional account, which can be business or creator, plus other requirements.
