How to See Who Viewed Your Instagram Story

Instagram’s own steps for checking Story viewers, how long the list lasts, what the numbers mean and the myths worth ignoring.

In short: open your Story in the Instagram app and swipe up to see the view count and the usernames of viewers. Only you can see this list. You can check it for up to 48 hours after posting by opening the Story from your Archive. People can tell when you view their Story, and Instagram has no feature that shows who viewed your profile.

How to see who viewed your Instagram Story

Instagram’s Help Center gives these steps for the iPhone and Android apps (How to tell who’s seen your Instagram story):

  1. Open your active Story (tap your profile picture at the top of your feed).
  2. Swipe up on the screen, or tap the viewer profile pictures at the bottom left.
  3. You’ll see the number of views and the usernames of people who viewed each photo or video in your Story.
  4. If you shared your Story to Facebook, scroll down to see who saw it on Facebook.

Instagram says only you can see who has viewed your Story. Your viewers can’t see each other in the list. Instagram also says this feature isn’t available on computers.

Seeing viewers after 24 hours (up to 48)

A Story disappears from your profile after 24 hours, but the viewer list doesn’t vanish at the same moment. Instagram says you can look at who has seen your Story up to 48 hours after you post it (How to tell who’s seen your Instagram story):

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. Tap Menu (☰) in the top right.
  3. Below How you use Instagram, tap Archive.
  4. Scroll to the Story you want, tap it and swipe up.

After 48 hours, the named list is no longer shown. If you need view numbers for longer, a professional account’s Insights keep Story metrics, but they show totals, not names (see below).

Why views are higher than the names you see

Instagram explains that the view count includes replays. If one person watched your Story three times, that can add three views but only one username (How to tell who’s seen your Instagram story).

The same article notes that the viewer list and view number don’t include usernames of Instagram Plus subscribers who previewed your Story. So a gap between the count and the list is normal; it isn’t a bug or a sign of hidden “stalkers”.

Can people see that you viewed their Story?

Yes. Instagram’s Help Center is direct about it: when you see someone’s Story, they’ll be able to tell that you’ve seen it (Who can tell that you’ve seen their Instagram story).

Apps and websites that promise “anonymous Story viewing” are not Instagram features. Many ask you to log in with your Instagram username and password. Don’t: handing your login to an unknown app puts your account at risk. If you already have, change your password and read our hacked account recovery guide.

Myth: you can see who viewed your profile

You can’t. Instagram’s Help Center documents a viewer list for Stories (and view counts for posts, Reels and live videos), but no feature that names who visited your profile. Apps that claim to show “profile visitors” are not Instagram features, and they often ask for your login.

If you have a professional (business or creator) account, Insights show overall numbers such as views, viewers, interactions and accounts engaged, plus audience demographics once you reach over 100 accounts, but not a list of names (About Instagram insights). Learn more in our Instagram Insights guide and business vs creator account guide.

How to hide your Story from someone

If you don’t want a particular person to see your Stories, hide them. They won’t see anything you add to your Story in future (Hide your Instagram story from someone):

  1. Go to your profile and tap Menu (☰).
  2. Below Who can see your content, tap Story, live and location.
  3. Tap Hide your story and live videos from specific people.
  4. Select the people, then tap Done. Tap again to unselect someone.

Only want a few people to see a Story? Share it to your Close Friends list instead of everyone.

Using Story viewer data for your business

  • Look at who returns. Accounts that watch every Story are your warmest audience; reply to their messages first.
  • Compare the first and last frame. If many people view frame 1 but few reach frame 5, shorten your Stories.
  • Use Insights for trends. The 48-hour list is for names; Insights are for comparing Stories over weeks.
  • Add a clear action on one frame, such as a link sticker. See how to add links to Instagram Stories.
  • Keep the best ones. Save evergreen Stories to Highlights with matching highlight covers, sized with our Instagram Story size guide.
