Instagram Close Friends: How It Works
Instagram’s own steps for building a Close Friends list, sharing to it, and what the people on it can see.
In short: go to Profile > Menu > Close Friends, tap Select next to the people you want and tap Done. Then choose Close Friends when you share a story, post, note or reel. People aren’t notified when you add or remove them, no one can ask to be added, and people on the list see a Close friends label and may see a green ring around your photo.

How to create your Close Friends list
Instagram gives these steps in the app (Create a Close Friends list on Instagram):
- Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
- Tap Menu (☰) in the top right.
- Below Who can see your content, tap Close Friends.
- Tap Select next to each person you want to add, or tap Search to find someone.
- Tap Done at the bottom to save.
You can change the list at any time. Instagram has only one Close Friends list per account, so if you want different groups (customers, team, family), think about which group matters most for this account. That’s our suggestion; Instagram doesn’t offer multiple lists in its Help Center.
How to remove someone from Close Friends
Open the same screen (Profile > Menu > Close Friends). Next to the person’s name, tap Done to deselect them, then tap Done at the bottom to save (Create a Close Friends list on Instagram).
Instagram says people won’t be notified when you add or remove them. Keep in mind that someone who used to see the green ring may notice it’s gone, because the label and ring only show to people on the list.
How to share a story with Close Friends only
Instagram’s steps for a Close Friends story (Share a story with your Close Friends list):
- Tap Create (+) at the top, or swipe right anywhere in Feed.
- Tap Story at the bottom.
- Tap the record button to take a photo, or tap and hold to record a video. To use a photo from your phone, swipe up.
- When you’re ready, tap Close Friends at the bottom instead of Your story.
Close Friends stories disappear after 24 hours, like normal stories. You can still see who watched: swipe up on the story, as explained in our guide on how to see who viewed your Instagram Story. Need the right dimensions? See the Instagram Story size guide.
Close Friends reels, posts and notes
Instagram says you can choose Close Friends when you share a post, note or reel, not just a story (Create a Close Friends list on Instagram). For reels, Instagram says you may be able to share with your list, so the option can depend on your app version and account.
One detail to know before you share a reel this way: if someone on your list likes, comments on or shares it, other people on the list can see their username and how they interacted (Share a story with your Close Friends list). On a Close Friends reel, your list members aren’t anonymous to each other.
What people on your list see
- A Close friends label when they view your notes, reels or stories shared to the list.
- A green ring around your profile photo (instead of the usual colourful ring) when you have a Close Friends story up. Instagram says they “may” see it.
- They can’t see who else is on your list, apart from the reel interactions above.
And no one can request to be added: only you control the list (Create a Close Friends list on Instagram).
Close Friends vs hiding your story
| Close Friends | Hide story from someone | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sees it | Only people on your list | Everyone except the people you hide it from |
| Applies to | The story, post, note or reel you choose to share that way | All your future stories and live videos |
| Does the person know? | Members see a label and green ring | Instagram doesn’t say they’re told |
| Best for | Small, private updates | Keeping one or two people out of everything |

How businesses use Close Friends
A business account can use Close Friends as a small VIP channel. Ideas we use with clients (our suggestions, not Instagram rules):
- Early access: show new stock, menus or dates to loyal customers a day before everyone else.
- Exclusive offers: a code that only list members see, so you can count how many people use it.
- Behind the scenes: rough cuts, team moments or polls for your most engaged followers.
- Team updates: a list of staff for internal reminders (use sparingly; a team chat is often better).
- Feedback group: ask regulars to vote on a new product with a poll sticker.
Two cautions. People on the list know they’re on it, so don’t treat it as secret. And don’t promise “VIP” access you can’t keep up every week. Plan Close Friends stories into your schedule with our free content calendar generator.
Close Friends checklist
- List built from Menu > Close Friends, with only people you’re happy to show private updates to.
- Reviewed every month or two; remove people quietly when needed.
- “Close Friends” tapped before sharing (not “Your story”).
- Remember: members see a label and green ring, and can see each other’s reel interactions.
- Story or reel adds something extra for the list, not just a repeat of public content.
