LinkedIn verification at a glance

Independent guide. Viral In City is an independent social media agency, not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to LinkedIn or Microsoft. We can’t verify accounts for you and will never ask for your ID, password or verification codes. Every rule below comes from LinkedIn Help, linked so you can check it at the source.

A verification badge is an icon next to your name on your LinkedIn profile. People who click it can see which details were verified (Verifications on your LinkedIn profile).

How to start verifying your profile

All verification options start from your profile. LinkedIn’s path for the work email method, which also shows the other options available to you (Workplace verification with your work email):

  1. Click the Me icon at the top of your LinkedIn homepage, then View profile.
  2. Click the Resources icon on your profile, then Verify now.
  3. Choose the verification you want, for example Verify your workplace or your identity.

Which options you see depends on your country, your company and your institution. If an option isn’t listed, it isn’t available to you yet; LinkedIn says it continues to expand eligibility (Verifications on your LinkedIn profile).

Identity verification (including DigiLocker in India)

Identity verification means your government-issued ID was checked by one of LinkedIn’s verification partners (Verifications on your LinkedIn profile):

  • U.S., Canada and Mexico: CLEAR, with a valid government ID and a personal phone number registered in one of those countries. A free CLEAR account is created during the process if you don’t have one.
  • India: DigiLocker, for members with DigiLocker credentials that meet LinkedIn’s other requirements.
  • Elsewhere: Persona, for members with a valid NFC-enabled passport.

LinkedIn says these partners may ask you to upload an ID and/or take a live selfie. The partners have sole access to that data and delete it according to their own privacy policies. The ID details aren’t shown on your profile, but the issuing country of your ID may be (Verifications on your LinkedIn profile).

Your verification uses the name on your profile. LinkedIn says the name you verify with must match your LinkedIn profile name, and if you change your name you may need to re-verify (Verifications on your LinkedIn profile).

Workplace verification with your work email

If your employer is supported, you can verify with your company email (Workplace verification with your work email):

  1. Go to Me > View profile > Resources > Verify now.
  2. Click Verify your workplace.
  3. Enter your current work email and click Send code.
  4. Open the email, then enter the code and click Confirm. The code expires 15 minutes after you receive it; click Resend code if needed.

Key rules from LinkedIn Help:

  • The email must match your current company’s email domain (for example yourname@yourcompany.com).
  • The feature is only available at select companies for now.
  • Others see the badge, not your email address.
  • You may need workplace verification to add or edit your work experience.
  • A toggle lets you save the work email to autofill lead forms; it’s off by default.
  • A verification may be removed if your organisation changes its approved email domains (Verifications on your LinkedIn profile).

Other workplace and education options

  • Microsoft Entra Verified ID: available if your company uses it and has enabled LinkedIn workplace verification.
  • LinkedIn Learning licence: if your company or educational institution gives you a licence and is included in verification, you can show a workplace or education verification.
  • LinkedIn Recruiter: people with certain Recruiter roles at companies using the corporate Recruiter product may display a Verified Recruiter label.

Why verification matters for businesses

LinkedIn says badges help you “signal authenticity and build trust”, and they can also appear on job posts and Company Pages (Verifications on your LinkedIn profile). Our suggestions on using that:

  • Founders and sales teams: a verified profile makes cold connection requests and InMails look less like spam.
  • Recruiters and hiring managers: candidates are more likely to trust a verified job poster.
  • Agencies and freelancers: verification adds a quick trust signal next to your reviews and portfolio.

Verification won’t fix a weak profile on its own. Pair it with a clear headline (try our LinkedIn headline generator) and the steps in our LinkedIn profile optimisation guide.

Stay safe: verification scams

  • LinkedIn verification is free and done inside LinkedIn with its partners. Anyone selling a “LinkedIn blue tick” is not offering an official service.
  • Never share your work email code, passport details or LinkedIn password with a third party, including agencies. We will never ask for them.
  • Start verification from your own profile (Resources > Verify now), not from a link in a message.

These are our suggestions, based on LinkedIn’s statement that verification is free and optional (Verifications on your LinkedIn profile).

Remove a verification

LinkedIn says you can remove verifications from your profile at any time in your settings (Verifications on your LinkedIn profile). For a work email verification, open Settings (Me icon on desktop, or your profile picture in the app), remove it and confirm. LinkedIn notes it can’t restore a deleted verification, and may keep limited data such as the work email for security and fraud prevention (Workplace verification with your work email).

Verification checklist

  • Profile name matches the name on your ID.
  • Current job listed with the right company Page.
  • Me > View profile > Resources > Verify now checked for available options.
  • Work email at your company’s domain ready, and the code entered within 15 minutes.
  • In India, DigiLocker credentials ready for identity verification.
  • No codes or ID details shared with anyone outside LinkedIn’s own flow.
