Instagram engagement rate per post (by followers) = (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ number of posts ÷ followers × 100. This free calculator works it out for you, plus the likes-and-comments-only rate and the rate by reach. Your numbers stay in your browser.
Your engagement rate
2.52% per post (by followers)
A guide, not a verdict: engagement depends on your niche, audience, content format and account history.
How Instagram engagement rate is calculated
Engagement rate tells you what share of your audience interacts with a post. Raw likes do not, because audience size changes everything: 100 likes is a lot for an account with 1,000 followers and very little for one with 100,000. This calculator shows four figures.
1. Engagement rate per post, by followers (the main figure)
(likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ posts ÷ followers × 100
This is the most common definition and the one used by the benchmark report cited below, which divides total interactions by follower count. Averaging per post means a busy month and a quiet month can be compared fairly.
2. Likes + comments only
(likes + comments) ÷ posts ÷ followers × 100
Saves and shares are only visible in your own Insights. Use this version when you compare your account with a competitor's, because likes and comments are all you can see on their posts (and only where like counts are not hidden).
3. Engagement rate by reach
(likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ posts ÷ average reach × 100
Reach is the number of accounts that saw a post. This figure answers a different question: of the people who actually saw your content, how many reacted? It is higher than the follower-based rate whenever a post reaches fewer accounts than you have followers, and lower when it reaches more (for example a Reel shown widely to non-followers). It is the better measure of how good the content itself was.
4. All posts combined
Total interactions across every post divided by followers. It grows with the number of posts, so use it to compare periods with the same number of posts, not as your engagement rate.
What is a good Instagram engagement rate?
We do not invent benchmarks, so here is what a public, clearly sourced report says, and how to read it:
- The 2026 Social Media Industry Benchmark Report by Quid (formerly Rival IQ), published in March 2026, puts the all-industry median Instagram engagement rate at 0.30% per post, down from 0.36% in the previous edition, roughly 17% lower year over year.
- In the same report, Higher Education and Sports led on Instagram, while Retail and Beauty stayed near the bottom. Median posting frequency was 3.69 posts per week.
- Its method: 150 randomly selected companies per industry across 18 industries, organic and paid posts, engagement = interactions ÷ follower count, using medians.
Those are brand accounts, many with large followings, so treat 0.30% as a reference point rather than a pass mark. A small local business or creator can see very different numbers. The two comparisons that matter most are your own trend over the last few months and accounts of a similar size in your niche. If your rate is rising while you post consistently, the content is working.
Where to find the numbers
For your own account, switch to a professional (business or creator) account and open Insights for each post: you will see likes, comments, saves, shares and accounts reached. Add them up for a set of recent posts, for example your last 10 or 12, and enter the totals with the number of posts. For another account, count the visible likes and comments on its recent posts and use the likes + comments figure.
How to improve your engagement rate
- Hook in the first seconds. Open Reels with the outcome, a question or a bold on-screen line instead of a logo.
- Write for saves and shares. Checklists, how-tos, comparisons and local guides give people a reason to keep or send a post.
- Ask for one action. End captions with a single clear prompt: comment a keyword, save for later, or send it to a colleague.
- Reply to comments. Answering early comments starts conversations and shows new visitors the account is active.
- Mix formats. Test Reels, carousels and single images, then repeat what your own Insights show working.
- Post consistently. A steady rhythm you can sustain beats bursts followed by silence.

Instagram Engagement Rate FAQ
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
There is no single number. The 2026 Social Media Industry Benchmark Report by Quid (formerly Rival IQ) puts the all-industry median for brand accounts at 0.30% per post by followers, with Higher Education and Sports well above it and Retail and Beauty near the bottom. The most useful comparison is your own recent posts and similar accounts in your niche.
What is the difference between engagement rate by followers and by reach?
Engagement rate by followers divides interactions by your follower count, so anyone can calculate it from public numbers and compare accounts. Engagement rate by reach divides interactions by the number of accounts that actually saw the post, which you only see in Instagram Insights. It shows how engaging the content was for the people who saw it.
Should I include saves and shares?
Yes, if you have them. Saves and shares are strong signals that people found a post useful, but they are only visible in your own Insights. If you compare with another account, use the likes + comments figure, because that is all you can see on their posts.
Why is my Instagram engagement rate dropping?
Common reasons are posting less often or less consistently, content that does not match what your audience followed you for, weak hooks in the first seconds of Reels, a follower base that includes inactive accounts, and wider platform trends: the Quid 2026 report records the all-industry Instagram median falling from 0.36% to 0.30% year over year.
