Account insights cover the past 90 days, post and Reel insights stay for two years, and follower data appears at 100 followers. What Instagram Insights is (and who gets it)

Instagram Insights is the free analytics built into Instagram. According to Instagram’s Help Center, if you have a public account (personal or professional) you can see trends across your followers and how your content performs, plus insights for individual posts, Stories, Reels and live videos (About Instagram insights).

  • Timeframe: preset or custom date ranges within the past 90 days for account insights (View account and content insights).
  • Per-post history: post, Reel and Story insights are available for up to two years.
  • Private accounts: if you switch to private you lose access to insights, but you can regain past data if you switch back to public within 90 days.
  • Professional to personal: Meta says switching from a business or creator account back to personal removes in-app insights, with data preserved for 90 days (Facebook Help).
  • Some metrics are estimated: Instagram labels several metrics as estimated and in development.

Definitions below are quoted or closely paraphrased from Instagram’s Help Center, checked 6 October 2026. Inside the app, tap the (i) icon on any insight to see Instagram’s current definition.

How to open Insights

In the app: go to your profile and open your insights or professional dashboard. The overview shows Views, Interactions, New followers and Content you shared. Tap any of them for detail, and use the dropdown at the top to change the date range (Instagram Help).

On a computer: on instagram.com, select Dashboard in the left menu, then Insights (professional accounts) or Your dashboard (personal accounts). Choose Account or Content and a date range of 7, 14, 30 or 90 days, or a custom range (Instagram Help).

For one piece of content: tap View insights under a post or Reel, or open a Story and swipe up.

A 20-minute monthly Insights review

  1. Set the date range to the last 30 days (or the previous month).
  2. Write down five numbers: views, viewers, interactions, new followers and content shared. Keep them in a spreadsheet.
  3. Sort your content in the content library by reach or interactions, and note the top three and bottom three pieces.
  4. Look for patterns: topic, format (Reel, carousel, photo), hook, length and posting time.
  5. Check audience: top locations, age ranges and most active times. Are they the customers you want?
  6. Decide three changes for next month, such as more of the top topic, a new hook style, or a different posting slot.
  7. Repeat next month and compare with your own previous numbers, not with other accounts.

Calculating engagement rate from Insights

Instagram doesn’t show one official “engagement rate”, so marketers calculate it in different ways. Two common formulas:

  • By followers: interactions on a post ÷ followers × 100.
  • By reach: interactions on a post ÷ viewers (accounts reached) × 100. This works better for Reels that reach many non-followers.

Whichever you choose, use the same formula every month. Our calculator shows both, with worked examples.

Reading the numbers without fooling yourself

  • Views aren’t people. One person can count as many views; use viewers for unique reach.
  • Short timeframes are noisy. One viral Reel can make a week look amazing; compare months.
  • Estimated metrics move. Instagram labels some metrics as estimated, so small changes may not mean much.
  • Posting less shows up as lower numbers. Check “Content you shared” before worrying about a drop.
  • A sudden fall may have a simple cause. Check Account Status and read our guide to what Instagram says about shadowbans.
  • Followers alone aren’t the goal. Saves, shares and enquiries tell you more about business results.
