Instagram Carousel Guide: Size, Limits and Ideas
Everything you need to plan, size and post carousels that people swipe to the end, with the rules from Instagram’s Help Center.
In short: an Instagram carousel can hold up to 20 photos and videos. Use one orientation for all slides, 1080 pixels wide with a ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4 (1080 × 1440 px is the tallest supported size). You get one caption for the whole post, videos in carousels aren’t Reels, and after posting you can reorder or remove slides but not add new ones.

Instagram carousel basics
A carousel is a single Instagram post with several photos or videos that people swipe through. According to Instagram’s Help Center (Share a post with multiple photos or videos):
- You can share up to 20 photos and videos in one carousel.
- The orientation you choose (square, portrait or landscape) applies to every slide; you can’t pick a different orientation per slide.
- You add one caption and one location for the whole post, and you can tag people on each photo.
- Likes and comments apply to the whole post, not to individual slides.
- Videos in carousels are not Reels: they don’t appear in the Reels tab or get Reels features.
- After posting, you can reorder or remove slides and edit the caption, location and tags, but you can’t add new slides.
Checked on 6 October 2026. Note: Meta’s Business Suite help page says the limit for posting to Instagram from Meta Business Suite on desktop is 10 photos, so the 20-slide limit applies to the Instagram app.
Carousel size: the best dimensions
Instagram keeps photos at their original resolution when they are between 320 and 1080 pixels wide and have an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4, which means a width of 1080 pixels with a height between 566 and 1440 pixels (Image resolution of photos you share on Instagram). Photos outside that range are cropped.
| Orientation | Ratio | Size at 1080 px wide | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portrait (tallest supported) | 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 px | Most screen space in the feed; text slides, products, people |
| Portrait | 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 px | A common portrait choice that also suits older templates |
| Square | 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 px | Grids, quotes, simple product shots |
| Landscape (widest supported) | 1.91:1 | 1080 × 566 px | Panoramas, wide event photos |
Ratios from Instagram Help; pixel sizes are our arithmetic at a 1080 px width. Upload photos at least 1080 px wide for the best quality.
Because one orientation applies to every slide, design all slides on the same canvas. If you mix a portrait photo with a landscape one, Instagram will crop one of them. Our image size guide has a free tool to resize images to these sizes.
How to post a carousel
From the Instagram app or instagram.com (Instagram Help):
- Tap Create (or click Create, then Post on a computer).
- Choose Select multiple (on a phone) and pick up to 20 photos and videos.
- Adjust the crop and choose one orientation for the whole post.
- Drag to reorder slides and remove any you don’t want.
- Apply a filter to all slides or edit each slide individually.
- Write one caption, add a location and tag people on individual photos.
- Share, or schedule it for later (see below).
Posts with several videos can take longer to upload, so Instagram suggests using a reliable network.
Why carousels work for businesses
Carousels let you explain something step by step in one post. People swipe at their own pace, and each slide can carry one idea. They are especially useful for:
- Teaching: step-by-step how-tos, checklists and mistakes to avoid.
- Selling: a product from several angles, a range of colours, or before and after.
- Proof: customer results, reviews and case studies, one per slide.
- Stories: behind the scenes of a project, from brief to finished result.
- Saving and sharing: practical lists people want to keep or send to a friend.
We don’t quote claims that carousels always get more reach than Reels or single photos; it depends on your audience. Test both and compare in your own Insights.

How to design a carousel people finish
- Slide 1 is the hook. Make the promise clear in a few big words: “5 mistakes that…”, “How we…”.
- One idea per slide. Short sentences, large text, plenty of space.
- Use a visual cue to swipe, such as a number (1/7) or an arrow, on the first slides.
- Keep a consistent design: same fonts, colours and margins on every slide.
- Put the payoff near the end and a clear call to action on the last slide: save, share, comment or visit the link in your bio.
- Write a caption that adds context, not one that repeats the slides. Use a few relevant keywords people might search for.
- Keep text away from the edges so nothing gets cut off on different phones.
Captions, hashtags and scheduling
- Caption length: Meta’s developer documentation gives a maximum of 2,200 characters for an Instagram caption. Check yours with our character counter.
- Hashtags: Instagram allows up to 5 hashtags on a post (Use hashtags on Instagram). Our guide to choosing the best hashtags applies to carousels too.
- Scheduling: Instagram lets public accounts schedule photos, carousels and Reels in the app, up to 25 posts a day and up to 30 days in advance (Instagram Help). See our guide on how to schedule Instagram posts.
Measure your carousels
On a public account, tap View insights under a post. Instagram lists views (the number of times your content was displayed), interactions (likes, comments, saves and shares) and profile activity for posts, and keeps post insights for up to two years (View insights on your Instagram posts).
Look especially at saves and shares: they show that people found the carousel worth keeping or passing on. Compare each carousel with your own recent posts, and use our engagement rate calculator to compare fairly over time. Our guide on how to read Instagram Insights explains every metric.
Common carousel mistakes
- Mixing orientations, so slides get cropped.
- A weak first slide that gives no reason to swipe.
- Too much text per slide.
- Low-resolution exports under 1080 px wide.
- Forgetting to proofread: you can edit the caption later, but not the images, without deleting the post.
- Expecting carousel videos to act like Reels: they won’t show in the Reels tab.
A carousel caption template
Use the caption to give context and a reason to act, not to repeat the slides:
- First line: the promise or question again, in different words, because it shows above “more”.
- Two or three sentences on why it matters or who it’s for.
- A clear action: “Save this for your next shoot”, “Send it to a friend who…”, or “Comment ‘guide’ and we’ll reply with the checklist”.
- Up to 5 relevant hashtags at the end.
Example for a bakery: “Planning a birthday cake? Here’s how far ahead to order, slide by slide. We get booked up most weekends, so save this and message us 2 weeks before your date. #CustomCakes #BirthdayCake #TorontoBakery #CakeOrders #SweetNonnaTO”
