Official = stated on the platform’s help page. Official range = the platform gives a range or ratio and we show a pixel size inside it. Our suggestion = the platform gives no pixel size, so we suggest one. Not verified = widely used, but we could not confirm it on an official page. Platforms change their layouts often; check the source link before a big campaign.

How to use the image resizer

  1. Choose an image. Your browser opens it locally. Nothing is uploaded, so it also works for unreleased product photos and client work.
  2. Pick a preset or type a custom width and height.
  3. Choose crop or fit. “Crop to fill” fills the frame and trims the edges; move the zoom and position sliders until the subject sits where you want it. “Fit inside” keeps the whole image and adds a background colour around it.
  4. Check the guides. For banners, a dashed box shows the safe area for text and logos. For profile pictures, a dashed circle shows the round crop. The guides are not added to your download.
  5. Download as JPG for photos (smaller files) or PNG for graphics with text, logos or transparency.

Tips for sharp images on every platform

  • Start big. Resizing down keeps quality; enlarging a small image makes it soft. The resizer tells you when it has to enlarge.
  • Design for the crop. Profile pictures are shown as circles and banners are cropped differently on phones, computers and TVs. Keep faces, logos and text in the centre.
  • Watch file size limits. YouTube thumbnails must be under 2 MB from a phone; Facebook says Page covers load fastest under 100 KB. Lower the JPG quality slider if a file is too big.
  • Use portrait for feeds. On Instagram, a 3:4 or 4:5 portrait image fills more of the screen than a landscape one.
  • Keep text readable. Large type, high contrast and few words. Small text on a thumbnail becomes unreadable on a phone.

Instagram’s grid and portrait posts

Instagram’s Help Center now lists 3:4 as the tallest supported photo ratio (1080 × 1440); for years the limit was 4:5 (1080 × 1350). If you want posts to look the same in the feed and on your profile grid, design at 3:4 and keep important content away from the top and bottom edges, then check the preview in the app before posting.

Sizes we deliberately left out

We did not include TikTok, Pinterest, Threads or WhatsApp, or Instagram ad placements, because we could not confirm current organic sizes on their official help pages at the time of writing. Ad specifications are published separately in each platform’s ads guide and change often.

Designing and resizing every post takes time. Our team plans, designs and publishes content for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube. Plan your month with the content calendar generator, or start with a free social media audit.

FAQ

Social Media Image Size FAQ

What is the best image size for Instagram posts?

Instagram keeps photos at full quality when they are 1080 pixels wide with an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 (1080 × 566) and 3:4 (1080 × 1440), according to its Help Center. Square 1080 × 1080 and portrait 1080 × 1350 or 1080 × 1440 all fit that range. Portrait sizes take up more of the screen in the feed.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

YouTube now recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels (16:9) for video thumbnails and 2160 × 3840 for Shorts, with a minimum width of 640 pixels for videos. The file must be under 2 MB if you upload from a phone (50 MB on desktop), so a 1920 × 1080 JPG is a practical choice for mobile uploads.

Does this resizer upload my photos?

No. The image is opened and resized by your own browser using the canvas feature. It never leaves your device, and nothing is stored or sent to us.

Should I crop or fit my image?

Crop to fill uses the whole canvas and cuts off the edges that do not fit; use the zoom and position sliders to keep the important part. Fit inside keeps the whole image and fills the empty space with a background colour, which is useful for logos, screenshots and product photos.

Why do some sizes say “Not verified”?

We only mark a size as official when we found it on the platform’s own help pages. Sizes that are widely used but not published by the platform, or that we could not check, are labelled so you can decide whether to rely on them.

Why does my image look blurry after uploading?

Usually because the original was smaller than the target size and had to be enlarged, or because the platform compressed it. Start from the largest original you have, export at the recommended size, and use PNG for graphics with text. The resizer warns you when it has to enlarge an image.
