Facebook Cover Photo Size

The cover and profile picture dimensions Facebook publishes, how covers crop on computers and phones, and a layout that works on both.

In short: Facebook’s Help Centre says a Page cover photo loads fastest as an 851 × 315 px sRGB JPG under 100 KB and must be at least 400 × 150 px; a personal profile cover must be at least 720 px wide. The cover is cropped differently on computers (16:9) and phones (2.4:1) and the profile picture covers part of the left side, so keep text and logos in the centre. Use PNG for covers with text or a logo.

How Facebook displays your cover on computers and phones

Facebook’s dimensions article says the cover photo is shown differently on each screen (Facebook Page profile picture and cover photo dimensions):

  • On a computer: the cover left-aligns with a full bleed and a 16:9 aspect ratio.
  • On a mobile device: it left-aligns with a full bleed and a 2.4:1 aspect ratio, and the profile picture overlaps the cover by about 40 pixels.
  • The left-hand side of the cover is partly covered by your profile picture, and the cover may be cropped and resized to fit different screens.

Because the visible area changes from screen to screen, no single file looks identical everywhere. The practical answer is a wide image with the important part in the middle.

Safe zone: where to put text and logos

Facebook doesn’t publish a pixel safe zone. Based on the display rules above, this is what we use on an 851 × 315 px canvas:

AreaWhat to doStatus
Centre (about 640 × 230 px)Headline, logo, offer and facesOur suggestion
Left edge and bottom-leftKeep clear; the profile picture covers part of itBased on Facebook Help
Top and bottom ~40 pxBackground only; these can be cropped on some screensOur suggestion
Right edgeBackground only; buttons and cropping can affect itOur suggestion

After uploading, check your Page on a laptop and on a phone. If text is cut off, move it towards the centre and upload again.

How to add or change a Facebook Page cover photo

  1. Log in to Facebook and click your profile photo in the top right.
  2. Click See all profiles and select the Page you want to switch into.
  3. Click your Page name in the left menu to go to the Page.
  4. Click Edit cover photo in the bottom right of the cover.
  5. Click Upload Photo to upload from your computer, or Select photo to use one already on your Page.
  6. Click and drag the photo up or down to reposition it, then save.

Facebook notes that all cover photos are public, and that covers must follow the Pages Terms: they can’t be deceptive, misleading or infringe anyone’s copyright (Add or change your Facebook Page's cover photo).

How to change the cover on a personal profile

  1. Click your profile picture in the top right, then your name, to go to your profile.
  2. Click Edit cover photo in the bottom right of the cover.
  3. Click Choose cover photo (or Upload Photo if you don’t have one yet), then upload a new photo or pick one from your albums.
  4. Drag the image up or down to reposition it.

Facebook says a profile cover image has to be at least 720 pixels wide and, like Page covers, is public (Add or change your cover photo on Facebook). We use the same 851 × 315 px layout (or 1702 × 630 px) for profiles so one design works for both.

How to keep your cover photo sharp

  • Photos: export an sRGB JPG. Facebook says an 851 × 315 px JPG under 100 KB loads fastest.
  • Logos and text: export as PNG, which Facebook says gives a better result for covers with logos or text.
  • Retina screens: if a JPG at 851 × 315 looks soft on your phone, try 1702 × 630 px with the same layout (our suggestion).
  • Don’t upscale a small image. Start from a large original and resize down.
  • Limit text. A short line (6 to 8 words) stays readable on a phone; a paragraph doesn’t.

Facebook’s own tips: use a unique image that represents your Page, such as a popular menu item, album artwork or people using your product, and experiment to see what your audience responds to.

Common cover photo mistakes

  • Putting the logo or text on the left, where the profile picture covers it.
  • Designing only for desktop, so the sides are cut off on phones.
  • Using a blurry upscaled image or a heavily compressed JPG for text.
  • Copying a stock template with someone else’s photo you don’t have rights to.
  • Leaving an old offer or event date on the cover for months.

Cover photo checklist

  • 851 × 315 px (or 1702 × 630 px), important content centred.
  • Left side and bottom-left kept clear for the profile picture.
  • JPG for photos, PNG for logos and text.
  • Checked on a computer and a phone after upload.
  • Profile picture 320 × 320 px with the logo inside the circle.
