Instagram Collab Posts
How to invite collaborators, accept or leave a collab, what happens if someone blocks or deletes, and how businesses use collabs, from Instagram’s Help Centre.
In short: a collab post has up to 5 co-authors and appears on each collaborator’s profile and in their followers’ feeds once they accept. Before sharing a post or Reel, tap Tag people, then Invite collaborator. The original creator owns the post and is the only one who can delete it. Collabs don’t work in Stories, and paid collabs still need the paid partnership label.

What Instagram collab posts are
Independent guide. Viral In City is an independent social media agency. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Instagram or Meta. Every rule quoted below comes from Instagram’s or Meta’s own Help Center or official blog, linked so you can check it at the source. Platforms change features often, so confirm details on the linked pages.
A collab post is one post with two or more authors. Instagram’s Help Centre says the creator of the original post invites another account as a collaborator; if they accept, their username is added to the post, it appears on their profile and it’s shared with their followers (Create collaborative posts on Instagram). The post’s header credits both accounts (About collab posts).
Collabs work for feed posts, carousels and Reels. You can’t add collaborators to Stories, though you can mention accounts in a Story.

Instagram collab rules at a glance
| Rule | What Instagram says |

| Public accounts | Can invite public or private accounts |
| Private accounts | Can invite public or private accounts, but only if the invited account follows them; if a public account accepts, the post is shared publicly through that account |
| Leaving | A collaborator can remove themselves at any time; the creator can remove a collaborator at any time |
| Blocking | If either account blocks the other, the collaboration ends; the post stays on the original creator’s profile |
| Deactivation | If the creator deactivates, the post disappears from all profiles until they reactivate |
| Stories | Collaborators can’t be added to Stories |
| Engagement | Accounts that accept can see all likes and comments on the post |

How to create a collab post, step by step
- Create your post or Reel as usual and go to the final screen before sharing.
- Tap Tag people.
- Tap Invite collaborator.
- Search for the account you want to add and tap it. Repeat for up to 5 collaborators.
- Tap Done, then share the post.
The post goes live on your profile straight away. It appears on each collaborator’s profile once they accept. To remove a collaborator before publishing, go back to Tag people and tap Remove next to their name (Instagram Help).
How to accept or decline a collab invite
Instagram sends the invitation as a message:
- Tap Messages.
- Open the conversation with the invitation from your Chats list.
- Tap the collaboration invitation, review the post, then accept or decline.
If you can’t find the invitation in your chats, check your message requests too. Accepting puts the post on your profile and in your followers’ feeds, so check the caption, tags and any brand claims first.
To leave a collab later: open the post, tap Options (top right), tap Stop sharing and follow the steps. To remove a collaborator from your own published post: open it, tap Options, tap Remove next to their name and tap Done (Instagram Help).
Collab vs tag vs mention
| Collab | Tag or mention | |
|---|---|---|
| Shared with the other account’s followers | Yes | No |
| Listed as an author | Yes | No |
| Appears on their profile | Yes, after they accept | Tagged photos go to their tagged tab automatically, unless they approve tags manually |
| Works in Stories | No | Mentions, yes |
From “How are collabs different from tagging or mentions?” in Instagram’s Help Centre.
Collab posts and paid partnerships
A collab credits both accounts, but it is not a paid partnership label. If a creator is paid, or gets free products or other value, for a post, Instagram’s branded content rules apply and the post should use the paid partnership label (Get started with branded content, How to use the paid partnership label). You can use both on the same post: collab for reach and credit, the label for disclosure.
Instagram also says that if a collab post goes against its Community Standards, it will be removed and action may be taken against the original creator and collaborators, and accounts that broke the guidelines may lose access to collabs. Agree the caption, claims and music before posting.

Collab post ideas for businesses
| Partner | Collab idea |
|---|---|
| A local creator | A Reel visiting your shop or trying your product, posted as a collab |
| A neighbouring business | A joint offer or event (café + bakery, gym + nutritionist) |
| A supplier or client | A behind-the-scenes Reel or case study, with their approval |
| Your team member | A founder or staff account co-authoring a launch post |
| Another brand in your niche | A giveaway or a carousel of tips both audiences want |
Pick partners whose followers are people you actually want to reach. A collab with a big account in a different niche brings views, not customers.
How to measure a collab post
- Every account that accepts can see the post’s likes and comments. Agree up front who shares which numbers (reach, views, saves, shares) from their Insights.
- Check profile visits and follows from the post in your Insights; our guide on how to read Instagram Insights explains each metric.
- For sales, give each partner a link or code you can track.
- Compare with your normal posts; our Instagram engagement rate calculator helps.
Why can’t I add a collaborator?
- It’s a Story: collaborators can’t be added to Stories.
- You have a private account and the person doesn’t follow you.
- You already have 5 collaborators on the post.
- Account restrictions: accounts that broke Instagram’s guidelines may not have access to collabs. Check Account status in the app.
- Old app version: update Instagram and try again.
Collab post checklist
- Partner’s audience matches the customers you want.
- Caption, tags, music and claims agreed by both sides.
- Paid partnership label added if there’s payment or free product.
- Invitation accepted (check message requests).
- Results shared from both accounts’ Insights.

How do I make a collab post on Instagram?
Before sharing, tap Tag people, tap Invite collaborator, search for the account and tap it, then tap Done and share. The post appears on their profile once they accept.
Can a private account do a collab post?
Yes. A private account can invite public or private accounts, but only accounts that follow it. If a public account accepts, the post is shared publicly through that account.
Can you add a collaborator to an Instagram Story?
No. Instagram says you can’t add collaborators to Stories, but you can mention other accounts.

Is a collab post the same as a paid partnership?
No. A collab credits co-authors. If there is payment or free product, use the paid partnership label too, as Instagram’s branded content rules require.
Do collab posts share likes and comments?
