How to Make Money on Instagram
Instagram’s official monetization tools and requirements, brand deals done properly, payouts, and a realistic plan. Independent guide, no income promises.
In short: switch to a professional account, follow Instagram’s Partner Monetization and Content Monetization Policies, and check Monetization status in Settings. Instagram says Gifts on Reels need 500 followers (you get $0.01 per Star) and Subscriptions need 10,000 followers. Most people also earn from brand deals (always use the paid partnership label), affiliate links or selling their own products and services.

The honest answer first
Independent guide. Viral In City is an independent social media agency. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Instagram or Meta. Every rule quoted below comes from Instagram’s or Meta’s own Help Center or official blog, linked so you can check it at the source. Platforms change features often, so confirm details on the linked pages.
You can earn money on Instagram in two broad ways: Instagram’s own monetization tools (such as Gifts, Subscriptions and badges, which pay you through Instagram) and money from outside Instagram (brand deals, affiliate links and selling your own products or services to people who find you there).
Nobody can promise how much you will earn. Instagram’s tools are available only to eligible accounts in eligible countries, and most creators and businesses earn mainly from brand partnerships or their own sales rather than platform payouts. We don’t quote “average earnings” figures because there is no reliable official data for them.
Requirements and payout rules below are from Instagram’s Help Center, checked 6 October 2026. Availability changes by country and over time; check the linked pages and your Professional dashboard.
Rules that apply to every Instagram monetization tool
To use Instagram’s monetization or promotional tools, your account and content must follow the Instagram Partner Monetization Policies. In summary, you must:
- Live in an eligible country where the feature is available.
- Follow the Community Standards, including rules on intellectual property and authenticity.
- Follow the Content Monetization Policies, a stricter set of rules for monetized content, profile pictures and bios.
- Share accurate information: posting misinformation can make you ineligible.
- Monetize authentic engagement only: Instagram says you may lose the ability to monetize if your audience significantly consists of fake engagement such as bought likes, follows or views.
You also need a professional account (creator or business). Switching is free in Settings under Account type and tools; if your personal account is private, switching makes it public (Instagram Help).
Check where you stand: in the app, open Settings, then Creator tools and controls or Business tools and controls, then Monetization status. It shows policy violations affecting monetization, and you can request a review if you think there’s a mistake (How to check your monetization status).
Instagram’s own ways to earn
| Tool | How you earn | Key requirements (per Instagram Help) |
|---|---|---|
| Gifts on Reels | Viewers buy Stars and send virtual gifts on your Reels; Instagram pays $0.01 USD per Star received | Professional account, at least 500 followers, policies above, Gifts Creators Terms, payout account; not for collaborative posts or accounts focused on children |
| Subscriptions | Followers pay monthly for subscriber-only content | Professional account with at least 10,000 followers, policies above, Subscriptions Terms; not for accounts primarily focused on children; selected countries |
| Badges | Viewers buy badges during your live videos | Eligible creators; see Instagram’s badges help page in the app |
| Bonuses | Instagram sometimes runs bonus programs for selected creators | Terms and payout dates are shown in the app |

On Gifts, Instagram notes that it takes a share when viewers buy Stars, and that Apple or Google in-app purchase fees (typically 30%) also come out of the Stars pack price. Your $0.01 per Star is what you receive.
Brand deals and the paid partnership label
For many creators, brand partnerships are the biggest income source. Instagram defines branded content as content for which the creator has been compensated with money or anything else of value, including free products or services (Get started with branded content).
- Disclose every time: Instagram says all branded content must be disclosed with the paid partnership label, and you must add it every time you post branded content.
- Enable it: Profile, Menu, Business or Creator tools and controls, Set up branded content tools, then Enable (or request a review if you aren’t eligible).
- Tag the brand: the brand must approve your first tag before its name shows in “Paid partnership with”; your brand partner needs a professional account (paid partnership label).
- Get discovered: Instagram’s creator marketplace lets brands find creators; you agree the terms directly with the brand.
- Local laws apply too: many countries have advertising rules for influencer marketing. The label helps, but check the rules where you and your audience are.
Brands look for a clear niche, an engaged audience in the right location, and a professional profile. A simple media kit (who you are, audience, past work, contact) helps.
Posting a brand deal together? A collab post shares it with both audiences; it still needs the paid partnership label. Which account type to use is covered in business vs creator account.
Affiliate links and selling your own products
You can also earn from Instagram without platform payouts:
- Affiliate links: recommend products and earn a commission through a brand’s affiliate program. Instagram has affiliate features for some creators; outside those, put links in your bio or Stories. Disclose affiliate relationships clearly.
- Your own products: digital products (templates, courses, presets), physical products, or merchandise.
- Your own services: coaching, consulting, photography, design, beauty, fitness, local services. For most small businesses, Instagram “makes money” by bringing enquiries through DMs, the link in bio and contact buttons.
- Booked work: UGC (user-generated content) creation for brands, where you make videos for a brand’s own channels.
These routes don’t depend on follower thresholds. A small account with the right audience can still sell well.
How Instagram payouts work
From About payouts on Instagram:
- Payouts are for business and creator accounts and need a payout account. Without one, you can earn up to $500 per monetization tool (maximum $1,500 across 3 tools); if you don’t add a payout account within 6 months, you forfeit those earnings.
- Most tools pay out around the 21st of each month for the previous month’s earnings. Bonuses pay around the 7th and 21st.
- Minimum balance: $5 in the US; outside the US, $100 for wire transfers or $25 for other payout methods. Lower balances roll over.
- You can check payout details in Professional dashboard > Tools > Payouts.
A realistic plan to start earning
- Pick a niche and audience that brands or customers will pay to reach.
- Switch to a professional account and fix your profile; our bio generator and username generator help.
- Post consistently, with Reels for reach; see how to get more Instagram followers.
- Check Monetization status and fix any violations early.
- Turn on the tools you qualify for (Gifts at 500 followers, Subscriptions at 10,000) and set up payouts.
- Build a media kit from your Insights and pitch relevant brands; our guide on reading Instagram Insights shows which numbers to use.
- Add an offer of your own: a service, product or affiliate list.

What to avoid
- Buying followers, likes or views. Instagram’s policies say fake engagement can cost you monetization, and Instagram warns against apps that offer likes and followers (Instagram Help).
- “Get paid to post” schemes that ask for an upfront fee or your login.
- Undisclosed sponsorships. Use the paid partnership label every time.
- Reposting other people’s content. It can break intellectual property rules and monetization policies.
- Fake “Meta” messages promising monetization or verification. Instagram communicates through the app; never share passwords or codes.
