How to Schedule Instagram Posts
Two free, official ways to schedule Instagram content, the limits Instagram publishes, and a weekly routine that saves hours.
In short: in the Instagram app, create a post or Reel, open More options, turn on Schedule this post, choose a date and time and tap Schedule. Public accounts can schedule up to 25 posts a day, up to 30 days ahead. On a computer, use Meta Business Suite: Content, Create post, Scheduling options, Schedule. Collabs, product tags, sponsored posts and fundraisers can’t be scheduled.

The short answer
You can schedule Instagram posts for free in two official ways:
- In the Instagram app: public accounts can schedule Reels, photos and carousel posts, up to 25 posts a day and up to 30 days in advance (Instagram Help: scheduled posts and Reels).
- In Meta Business Suite on a computer: create a post, turn on Scheduling options, pick a date and time and click Schedule (Meta Business Help).
Meta also says that with some paid Meta One plans you can schedule posts and Reels up to a year (365 days) in advance (Meta Help Center).
All limits checked on Instagram’s and Meta’s help pages on 6 October 2026. Features roll out gradually, so your app may differ slightly.
Before you start: requirements and limits

If you plan to post a collab with another account, a product-tagged post or a paid partnership, post it live instead of scheduling it.
How to schedule a post or Reel in the Instagram app
From Instagram Help:
- Tap Create in the top left, or swipe right anywhere in Feed. Then tap Post or Reel.
- Select a photo or video (or several, for a carousel), then tap Next.
- Add a caption, effects or filters.
- Open More options if you see it, and turn on Schedule this post or Schedule this reel.
- Choose a date and time.
- Tap Schedule.
When you pick a time, Instagram may show Follower active times. Meta says these suggestions reflect your current time zone and use your followers’ activity over the last 28 days (Meta Help Center).
How to edit, reschedule or delete a scheduled post
Instagram gives two ways to manage scheduled content (Instagram Help):
- From your profile: tap your profile picture, then Menu in the top right. Below Your insights and tools, tap Scheduled content. Tap Options next to the post and choose Delete, Edit post, Reschedule or Share now.
- While creating a new post: tap Create, then Post or Reel, then Scheduled to see and manage your queue.
How to schedule Instagram posts from a computer (Meta Business Suite)
Meta Business Suite is free and lets you schedule Facebook and Instagram posts in one place. From Meta Business Help and its desktop guide:
- Go to Meta Business Suite, then Content and Create post.
- Under Post to, choose your Instagram profile (and your Facebook Page if you want to post to both).
- Add your media and write the text. You can customise the text separately for Facebook and Instagram.
- Turn on Scheduling options and choose a date and time. Click Active times to see recommended times based on when followers were most active over the past 7 days.
- Click Schedule.
You’ll find scheduled posts in the Planner tab or under Content > Posts & reels > Scheduled, where you can also reschedule them. Meta’s desktop guide notes a limit of 10 photos when posting to Instagram from Business Suite, while the Instagram app allows carousels of up to 20 photos and videos.
Posting to your Facebook Page as well? The Facebook steps and limits (20 minutes to 29 days ahead) are in our guide to scheduling Facebook posts.
App or Business Suite: which should you use?
| Instagram app | Meta Business Suite | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Creators and small businesses working from a phone | Teams and businesses that also run a Facebook Page |
| Plan from a computer | No (app) | Yes |
| Calendar view | Scheduled content list | Planner (week or month) |
| Post to Facebook at the same time | Depends on your sharing settings | Yes, choose both destinations |
| Time suggestions | Follower active times (last 28 days) | Active times (past 7 days) |
| Team access | Whoever has the login | Give people content permission instead of sharing passwords |
Third-party scheduling tools that use Meta’s official publishing tools can also post to professional accounts. Whatever you use, never share your Instagram password with a tool or freelancer you don’t trust; give access through Meta’s own permissions where possible.
When to schedule: use your own data
There is no universal best time. Use Instagram’s suggested times and your Insights:
- Check your followers’ most active hours in Insights (available once you have at least 100 followers).
- Schedule your main posts into those windows for four weeks.
- Compare results and keep the slots that work.
Our guide to the best time to post on Instagram walks through this test, and the content calendar generator gives you a 30-day plan to fill your schedule.
A simple weekly scheduling routine
- Monday (30 minutes): review last week in Insights; note the best posts.
- Tuesday (2 hours): create the week’s Reels, carousels and photos in one session.
- Wednesday (30 minutes): write captions (check length with our character counter) and choose up to 5 relevant hashtags.
- Wednesday: schedule everything into your best time slots.
- Daily (15 minutes): post Stories live, reply to comments and messages. Scheduling saves time, but replies still need a human.
Common scheduling problems
- No scheduling option: make sure your account is public and the app is updated.
- Can’t tag a product or add a collaborator: those features aren’t compatible with scheduled content; post live instead.
- Wrong time: Meta says Follower active times reflect your current time zone. Double-check the time you pick when you travel or post for an audience in another country.
- Too many posts: the app limit is 25 scheduled posts a day.
- Can’t find a scheduled post: look in Profile, Menu, Scheduled content, or in Business Suite under Content, Scheduled.
- A team member can’t schedule in Business Suite: they need full control or content permission for the account.
What to schedule and what to post live
| Schedule ahead | Post live |
|---|---|
| Evergreen Reels and tutorials | Collab posts with another account (not compatible with scheduling) |
| Carousels and educational posts | Posts with product tags (not compatible with scheduling) |
| Announcements with a fixed date | Paid partnership (sponsored) posts |
| Holiday and seasonal posts | Fundraisers |
| Weekly series (tips, FAQs, customer stories) | Reactions to news or trends that need perfect timing |
Before a scheduled post goes out, check it still makes sense: a sale may have ended, or news may make a light-hearted post feel wrong. Use Reschedule or Delete from Scheduled content if plans change.
Agencies and teams should keep one shared calendar (a spreadsheet works) that lists each post’s date, time, format, caption and status, so nothing is scheduled twice.
