Instagram Story Size: Dimensions and Safe Zones

The right Story dimensions, where to keep text and logos, video length and Highlights, with each number linked to its source.

In short: design Instagram Stories in a 9:16 vertical ratio, at 1080 × 1920 pixels or 1440 × 2560 pixels (Meta’s recommended resolution for Story image ads). Keep text and logos out of roughly the top 14%, bottom 35% and 6% on each side. Videos up to 60 seconds play as one clip, and Stories disappear after 24 hours unless you add them to Highlights.

The short answer

Instagram Stories are full-screen and vertical, so design them in a 9:16 ratio. In practice that means 1080 × 1920 pixels, or 1440 × 2560 pixels if you want extra sharpness. Both are exactly 9:16.

Here is where each number comes from, because it matters:

  • Instagram’s Help Center doesn’t publish one pixel size for ordinary (organic) Stories. It explains how to share them and how long they last.
  • Meta’s Ads Guide lists a recommended resolution of 1440 × 2560 pixels for image ads in Instagram Stories (Image ad specs on Instagram Stories). Because ads appear between organic Stories, this is the closest official reference for the full-screen frame.
  • 1080 × 1920 is the same 9:16 shape at a lower resolution. It is widely used and works well for organic Stories, but we label it as a common practice rather than an official Instagram number.

Checked on Instagram’s Help Center and Meta’s Ads Guide on 6 October 2026. Meta changes specs from time to time; check the linked pages before a big campaign.

Safe zones: where to put text and buttons

A Story frame isn’t all usable space. Your profile picture and name sit at the top, and the reply bar, stickers and (for ads) the call-to-action sit at the bottom. Meta’s Ads Guide suggests leaving roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% on each side free from text, logos and other key elements, so they aren’t cropped or covered.

On common canvases, that works out to:

CanvasTop margin (14%)Bottom margin (35%)Each side (6%)
1080 × 1920about 269 px672 pxabout 65 px
1440 × 2560about 358 px896 pxabout 86 px

Our arithmetic from Meta’s percentages. Meta’s safe zone help page also notes that on screens taller than 9:16, a creative may be zoomed (cropping areas outside the safe zone) or shown with black bars.

For organic Stories the bottom margin is less critical than for ads, but keeping important text in the middle of the frame is still the safest habit, especially if you add stickers, polls or links.

How to make a Story that fits perfectly

  1. Start with a 9:16 canvas (1080 × 1920 or 1440 × 2560) in your design app.
  2. Turn on guides for the safe zone: a line about 14% from the top and 35% from the bottom.
  3. Put the message in the middle. Headline, product and key visual go in the central area.
  4. Leave room for interactive stickers such as polls, questions or links, which you add in the app.
  5. Export as JPG or PNG for images. Upload at full quality.
  6. Preview on a phone before posting. Check that nothing important is hidden behind the profile name or reply bar.

Instagram’s Story tips page also covers the creative tools: text, music, drawing, Layout, Boomerang and Hands-Free recording.

What about photos that aren’t 9:16?

Most phone photos are 3:4 or 4:3, and Feed posts are often 4:5 or square. When you share them to a Story, they won’t fill the screen, so Instagram shows a background around them. You have three options:

  • Embrace the frame: place the photo in the middle and add text above or below it.
  • Crop to 9:16 in an editing app before uploading, keeping the subject centred.
  • Design a 9:16 template that holds a 4:5 post with your branding around it, useful when you share Feed posts to Stories.

For Feed posts, Instagram keeps photos at their original resolution when they are between 320 and 1080 pixels wide with an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4 (Image resolution of photos you share on Instagram). Our social media image size guide lists every Feed, Reel and profile size with its source and a resize tool.

Story videos: length and format

Instagram says that when you share a video up to 60 seconds long to your Story, it appears as one clip. Longer videos are broken into multiple clips and can be trimmed with the video trimmer (currently iOS only), according to Instagram Help.

  • Film vertically so the video fills the 9:16 frame.
  • Add captions or on-screen text, because many people watch Stories with the sound off.
  • Keep each clip focused on one point; split longer explanations into a short series.
  • If the video is evergreen, consider posting it as a Reel as well; Reels can be recommended to new audiences, while Stories are mainly seen by people who already follow you. See our guide to the Reels algorithm.

Highlights: keep your best Stories

Stories disappear after 24 hours unless you add them to your profile as Highlights (Instagram Help: Stories). For a business, Highlights act like a mini website on your profile:

  • Start here / About: who you are and what you offer.
  • Services or menu: one Story per service, product range or price list.
  • Reviews: screenshots of customer messages (with permission).
  • FAQs: delivery, booking, opening hours.
  • How to order / contact: a clear final step.

Use the same 9:16 safe-zone rules for Highlights, and design simple matching covers so the row looks tidy.

Measure what your Stories do

Instagram’s Story insights are available on public accounts for up to two years, even though the Story itself expires. The main metrics are:

  • Views: the number of times your Story was played or displayed.
  • Viewers: unique accounts that saw it at least once.
  • Interactions: replies, shares, sticker taps, link taps and similar actions.
  • Profile activity: profile visits, follows or website clicks from the Story.

Compare Stories with your own recent Stories rather than with other accounts. Our guide on how to read Instagram Insights explains each metric and what to do with it.

Common Story size mistakes

  • Text at the very top or bottom, where it sits under the profile name or reply bar.
  • Landscape videos that become a small strip in the middle of the screen.
  • Tiny text. Stories are viewed quickly on a phone; use large, high-contrast type.
  • Low-resolution images stretched to full screen. Start at 1080 × 1920 or larger.
  • Too much on one Story. One message per frame works better than a crowded slide.
  • Designing for desktop. Always preview on a real phone before posting.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is an Instagram Story?

Design Stories in a 9:16 vertical ratio. Meta’s Ads Guide recommends 1440 × 2560 pixels for Story image ads; 1080 × 1920 is the same ratio and is widely used for organic Stories.

What is the Instagram Story safe zone?

Meta’s Ads Guide suggests leaving roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% on each side free from text and logos. On a 1080 × 1920 canvas that is about 269 px at the top, 672 px at the bottom and 65 px on each side.

How long can an Instagram Story video be?

Instagram says videos up to 60 seconds appear as one Story clip; longer videos are split into multiple clips.

How long does an Instagram Story stay up?

24 hours, unless you add it to a Highlight on your profile.

Does Instagram publish an official Story size?

Instagram’s Help Center doesn’t list a pixel size for organic Stories. Meta’s Ads Guide gives 1440 × 2560 pixels and 9:16 for Story ads, which is the closest official reference.

Why does my photo have a background in Stories?

Because it isn’t 9:16. Crop it to 9:16 or place it on a 9:16 template before sharing.

Can I see insights for old Stories?

Yes. Instagram says Story insights are available for up to two years on public accounts, even though the Story itself expires after 24 hours.
