Instagram Username Generator
Type your name or brand, what you do and, if you like, your city. Get 24 username ideas that follow the usual Instagram rules, then copy one and check it in the app.
Enter your name or brand, a keyword for what you do and an optional location. The generator suggests 24 Instagram usernames using only letters, numbers, periods and underscores, skips ideas that are too long or start or end with a period, and lets you copy each one. It can’t see which names are taken, so look each one up and confirm in the Instagram app.
Username ideas
Look up opens instagram.com/username in a new tab. A profile there means the name is taken; if no profile shows, the name may still be unavailable, so confirm in the app.
Type any username to check its length and characters.

How to use the username generator
- Start with the name people will search for. Your brand name for a business, your own name for a personal brand.
- Add what you do. A word like “bakery” or “coach” gives you variations such as name.bakery when the plain name is taken.
- Add your city if you serve local customers. It produces ideas like crumbs.leeds, which also tell people where you are.
- Pick a style and shortlist three. Say each one out loud. If you have to spell it out (“crumbs, underscore, underscore…”), choose another.
- Check availability in the app. Go to your profile, tap Edit profile and type the username. Instagram tells you straight away whether you can use it.
Instagram username rules
| Rule | What to know |
|---|---|
| Characters | Letters, numbers, periods (.) and underscores (_). No spaces, emoji or other symbols. |
| Length | Commonly reported as up to 30 characters. The app tells you if it’s too long. |
| Periods | To be safe, don’t start or end with a period or use two in a row; the generator avoids these. |
| Unique | Each username can belong to only one account. When it’s taken, Instagram suggests adding periods, numbers, underscores or abbreviations. |
| Changes | You can change it later in Edit profile or Accounts Center. Big accounts may face a review, and followers may be notified (Instagram Help). |
What makes a good username
- Short and easy to say. People will type it from memory, a flyer or a podcast.
- Matches your other accounts. The same handle on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube makes you easier to find and tag.
- Few symbols. One period or underscore is fine; three in a row looks like a copycat account.
- No look-alike characters. l and 1, O and 0 are easy to confuse. The checker flags them.
- No random numbers. “crumbs.leeds” is better than “crumbs8472”. A year or a number with meaning is fine.
- Not someone else’s brand. Don’t use another company’s trademark; Instagram has a process for trademark owners to report usernames.
Username vs name: two different fields
Your username is your @handle and your profile link (instagram.com/username). Your name is the bold text on your profile and can include spaces, capital letters and a keyword, for example “Crumbs | Bakery Leeds”. Both are searchable, so if your username has to be a variation, put your plain brand name in the name field. Then write a bio that says what you do with our Instagram bio generator.
Username ideas by type
- Local business: brand + city (crumbs.leeds), brand + category (crumbsbakery), city + category (leedsbakery, if it’s genuinely yours).
- Brand or shop: brand + hq, shop, studio, co or official; “the” or “shop” in front.
- Creator: your first name + what you do (priyabakes, priya.thebaker), or with/by + name.
- Professional: first.last, first initial + last name, or name + profession (dr.priyasharma).
Avoid usernames that could mislead people into thinking you are someone else, such as an official account for a brand you don’t own.
After you pick your username
Use your new username everywhere: your website, email signature, packaging and other social profiles. Instagram Username Generator FAQ
What characters can an Instagram username have?
Letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Spaces, emoji and other symbols don’t work. When a name is taken, Instagram’s Help Center suggests adding periods, numbers, underscores or abbreviations to find an available version.
How long can an Instagram username be?
The commonly reported limit is 30 characters. Instagram tells you in the app if a username is too long. Shorter is better anyway: easier to remember, say and type.
Does this tool check if a username is available?
No. It runs in your browser and can’t see Instagram’s database. Use the Look up button to open instagram.com/username, then confirm in the app: type the username in Edit profile and Instagram tells you whether you can use it.
What if the username I want is taken by an inactive account?
Instagram’s Help Center says you can choose an available version of the username by adding periods, numbers, underscores or abbreviations.
How do I change my Instagram username?
Go to your profile, tap Edit profile and change the username, or update it in Accounts Center under Profiles. If your account reaches a lot of people, the change may need to be reviewed, and your followers may be notified.
Should my username be my name or my business name?
Use the name people will search for. Businesses usually use the brand name, adding the city or category only if the plain name is taken. Creators and professionals often use their own name so the account can grow with them.
Is anything I type saved?
No. Ideas are generated in your browser. Nothing is sent to us or stored.
