How to use the caption generator
- Say what you do and what the post is about. “Bakery” and “our new pistachio croissant” give far better captions than “business” and “post”.
- Choose a goal. A caption that sells is built differently from one that starts a conversation or teaches something. Pick the one job this post has to do.
- Choose a tone and a call to action. Match how your brand speaks, then decide the single action you want: comment, save, share, DM, visit the link in bio or book.
- Edit before you post. Add a detail only you know: a price, a date, a customer’s words, a behind-the-scenes fact. That is what makes a template sound like you.

What makes a good Instagram caption
Most strong captions follow the same four-part shape:
- Hook (first line). Only the first line or two show before “more”, so lead with the most interesting part: a question, a bold statement, a number or the result.
- Body. One idea, said simply. Give the useful detail, the story or the reason to care. Short paragraphs and line breaks are easier to read on a phone.
- Call to action. Ask for one thing. “Comment YES”, “Save this for later” or “DM us INFO” works better than a list of five requests.
- Hashtags. Instagram allows up to 5 hashtags on a post. Build a set with our Instagram hashtag generator.
Captions can be up to 2,200 characters according to Meta’s developer documentation, so length is rarely the problem. Clarity is.
On Reels, the caption works together with the hook in the first second of the video. Our guide on how to go viral on Instagram Reels covers hooks, editing and testing ideas with trial reels.
Once your caption is ready, post it when your audience is online. Our guide to the best time to post on Instagram shows how to find that in your own Insights.

Caption formulas by goal
| Goal | Structure | Example opening |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation | Question → why you ask → “tell us below” | “Be honest: sweet or savoury breakfast?” |
| Promotion | Name the product → one benefit → how to get it | “Meet our new pistachio croissant.” |
| Education | Promise → 3 tips → save prompt | “3 things nobody tells you about teeth whitening.” |
| Launch or news | Announcement → what changes → date | “It’s official: we open in Marina on 1 November.” |
| Behind the scenes | Set the scene → what you do → invite questions | “What really happens at 5 a.m. in our kitchen.” |
| Social proof | Customer words → context → soft offer | “This message made our week.” |
Hooks you can adapt
- “Stop scrolling if you [problem].”
- “The [topic] mistake we see every week.”
- “Save this before your next [event or purchase].”
- “You asked, we listened: [news].”
- “Before and after: [result].”
- “Hot take: [opinion your audience will react to].”
Keep hooks honest. If the first line promises something, the post has to deliver it, or people will stop trusting your captions.
Choosing a tone
Tone is how your brand sounds. A family café can be warm and playful; a law firm or clinic usually needs to sound calm and professional; a luxury brand says less and lets the visuals speak. Pick one tone and keep it across posts so followers recognise your voice. The generator also cuts back on emoji automatically for professional and luxury tones.
Emoji: helpful or distracting?
Emoji can add warmth, break up text and act as bullet points. They can also make a caption hard to read or look spammy. Use one at the end of the hook, one before the call to action, and use number emoji for lists if they suit your brand.
Writing captions every week takes time. Our Instagram management service covers 15 Reels and 15 posts a month, each with a researched caption, hashtags and a call to action, scheduled for your audience’s time zone. Start with a free social media audit, find video topics with the Reels and Shorts ideas generator, or check your length with the character counter.

Instagram Caption Generator FAQ
How long can an Instagram caption be?
Up to 2,200 characters, according to Meta’s developer documentation for publishing to Instagram. Only the first line or two show before people tap “more”, so the opening line matters most. Check the length of any caption with our free social media character counter.
Are short or long captions better?
Neither always wins. Short captions suit Reels and strong visuals; longer captions suit tips, stories and posts people save. Write as long as the post needs, put the point in the first line, and compare your own results over a few weeks.
Is this an AI caption generator?
No. It combines hand-written hooks, body lines and calls to action by goal and tone, so it works instantly in your browser with no account. Treat each caption as a first draft and add the details only you know: product names, prices, dates and your own voice.
How many emoji should I use?
Use them to add tone or structure, not to replace words. One or two per caption suits most brands; professional and luxury accounts often use fewer. Set the emoji option to none, some or more to see the difference.
Can I use these captions on Facebook, LinkedIn or TikTok?
Yes, with small edits. LinkedIn readers expect a more professional tone, and every platform has its own limits. Paste the caption into our social media character counter to check it against each platform.
Is anything I type saved?
No. The caption generator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us or stored.
