Instagram Caption Formatter
Paste your caption to fix spacing and line breaks, turn lists into bullets and tidy your hashtags, with checks against Instagram’s caption and hashtag limits.
Paste your caption. The formatter removes trailing spaces and extra blank lines, can turn dashes into bullet points, can move hashtags to the end and remove duplicates, and checks the result against Instagram’s limits: 2,200 characters and 20 @ tags (Meta developer documentation) and up to 5 hashtags per post (Instagram Help Center). Copy the formatted caption and paste it into Instagram.
Edit it here if you like, then copy and paste it into Instagram.
Preview
Roughly how the caption reads. Instagram shows the first lines, then “more”.

How to use the Instagram caption formatter
- Paste your caption from your notes app, a document or a caption generator.
- Choose options: bullets for lists, moving hashtags to the end, and the invisible-character fix only if you need it.
- Check the warnings for length, hashtags and mentions.
- Read the preview, especially the first line.
- Copy and paste into Instagram when you create the post.
Instagram caption limits
| Item | Limit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Caption length | 2,200 characters | Meta developer docs: IG User Media |
| Hashtags | Up to 5 on a post; more than 5 and it won’t post | Instagram Help: Use hashtags |
| @ mentions | 20 @ tags per caption | Meta developer docs |
| Hashtag characters | Numbers are allowed; spaces and special characters like $ or % won’t work | Instagram Help |
| Links | Not clickable in captions | What you see in the app |
The developer documentation also lists 30 hashtags for the API; we follow the stricter 5-hashtag rule in Instagram’s Help Center.
How to format an Instagram caption that people read
- Hook in the first line. Only the start of the caption shows before “more”, so lead with the most interesting point.
- Short paragraphs. One idea per line or two, with a blank line between ideas.
- Lists for steps or features. Bullets are easier to scan than a long sentence.
- One call to action. Ask a question, invite a save, or point to the link in your bio.
- Hashtags at the end. Up to 5 relevant ones. Our Instagram hashtag generator builds a set.
Why line breaks disappear (and how to keep them)
- Trailing spaces: in our experience, spaces at the end of lines can cause line breaks to be lost. The formatter removes them.
- Hidden formatting: text copied from some apps carries extra characters. Pasting into this tool and copying the result gives you plain text.
- Several blank lines in a row: they are collapsed to one, which is what most people want anyway.
- Still losing blank lines? Tick “Keep blank lines with an invisible character”. It adds an invisible Braille blank (U+2800) on empty lines. It’s a workaround, not an Instagram feature, and screen readers may announce it.
Example
The default example above starts with extra spaces, three blank lines, dashes for a list and hashtags scattered through the text, including #autumn twice. After formatting, it has single blank lines, a bulleted list and four unique hashtags at the end, using under 200 of the 2,200 characters.
Common caption mistakes
- More than 5 hashtags, so the post or comment won’t go through.
- The hook buried under greetings or emoji.
- Links in the caption that nobody can tap.
- Styled fonts for the whole caption, which are hard to read and bad for accessibility. If you use our Instagram fonts generator, style only a word or two.

Instagram Caption Formatter FAQ
How long can an Instagram caption be?
Up to 2,200 characters. Meta’s developer documentation for publishing Instagram media lists a maximum of 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags per caption. Instagram’s Help Center now says you can use up to 5 hashtags on a post, so the tool checks for 5.
How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?
Up to 5 on a post, according to Instagram’s Help Center. If you include more than 5, Instagram says your comment won’t post. The formatter warns you when a caption has more than 5 and flags repeated hashtags.
Why does Instagram remove my line breaks?
Line breaks usually survive if you type or paste the caption as plain text. Problems often come from trailing spaces at the end of lines or from copying from apps that add hidden formatting. The formatter strips those spaces. If blank lines still disappear in your app, try the invisible-character option.
What does the invisible character option do?
It puts an invisible Braille blank character (U+2800) on each empty line so the blank line is kept. It’s a common workaround, not an Instagram feature. Screen readers may announce it, so use it only if your blank lines keep disappearing.
Should hashtags go in the caption or a comment?
Instagram’s Help Center says you can add hashtags in the caption or the comments of your post. Putting them at the end of the caption keeps the opening line clean, which is what the Move hashtags option does.
Are links in Instagram captions clickable?
No. Links in post captions aren’t clickable, so point people to the links on your profile or a Story link sticker instead.
Is anything I type saved?
No. The caption is formatted in your browser. Nothing is sent to us or stored.
