YouTube Shorts Size and Specs

The aspect ratio, length, resolution and thumbnail size YouTube publishes for Shorts, plus the export settings and safe zone we use.

In short: a YouTube Short must be square or vertical and up to 3 minutes long, and YouTube Help says Shorts can be uploaded at up to 1080p. For a full-screen Short, export at 1080 × 1920 px (9:16). Custom Shorts thumbnails should be 2160 × 3840 px (9:16). Shorts over one minute with an active Content ID claim are blocked, so be careful with music.

What makes a video a Short

YouTube decides by shape and length. Its Help Center says videos uploaded on or after 15 October 2024 with a square or vertical aspect ratio up to three minutes are categorised as Shorts. For Official Artist Channels and channels linked to a music content owner, the same rule applies to uploads from 8 December 2025 (Understand three-minute YouTube Shorts).

That means you don’t need #Shorts in the title for a video to count as a Short. If you don’t want a vertical or square video treated as a Short, YouTube says to use a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9 for long-form uploads.

Videos uploaded before 15 October 2024 that are longer than one minute stay long-form videos, even if they’re vertical.

Best resolution for YouTube Shorts

YouTube Help says you can upload Shorts with a maximum resolution of 1080p (Get started creating YouTube Shorts). In practice, export vertical Shorts at 1080 × 1920 px (9:16). Exporting at 4K for a Short adds file size without adding detail to what viewers see.

  • Frame rate: keep the frame rate you recorded in. YouTube’s recommended upload settings say content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded (Recommended upload encoding settings).
  • Format: MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the container and codec YouTube recommends for uploads in the same article.
  • Square: 1080 × 1080 px works, but a square Short leaves empty space above and below on a phone. Vertical 9:16 uses the whole screen.

YouTube’s encoding article also notes that when you upload vertical or square video, the player adapts to the shape automatically, so you don’t need to add black bars.

Safe zone: keep text away from the edges

YouTube Help doesn’t publish a pixel safe zone for Shorts. On a phone, the Shorts player places the channel name, title and the Like, Comment, Share and Remix buttons over your video. To keep your own text readable, we suggest:

Area of a 1080 × 1920 frameWhat to keep thereStatus
Bottom ~20% (about 380 px)No captions or key text; the title and channel name sit hereOur suggestion
Right ~15% (about 160 px)No text; the action buttons sit hereOur suggestion
Top ~10% (about 190 px)Nothing essential; search and menu icons can appearOur suggestion
CentreFaces, products, on-screen text and burned-in captionsOur suggestion

Check on a real phone before you publish: play the Short from your channel and look at what the buttons cover. The layout changes with app versions, so a quick check beats a fixed template.

YouTube Shorts thumbnail size

YouTube’s thumbnail article recommends 2160 × 3840 px for Shorts thumbnails, an aspect ratio of 9:16 and a minimum height of 640 px (Add custom thumbnails on YouTube). Files can be up to 50 MB when you upload from a computer.

  • Custom Shorts thumbnails can currently only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer: Content > Shorts > select the Short > Thumbnail > Upload file.
  • Your account must be verified to upload custom thumbnails.
  • YouTube notes that vertical videos with 16:9 custom thumbnails are replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages, so make Shorts thumbnails vertical.

For long-form thumbnails (3840 × 2160 px, 16:9), see our YouTube thumbnail size guide.

How to upload a Short at the right size

From a computer (Upload YouTube Shorts):

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. Click Create > Upload videos.
  3. Select a video that is up to 3 minutes long and square or vertical. You can choose up to 15 short videos at a time; finish each draft’s details before publishing.

From the YouTube app: tap Create > Upload a video and choose a square or vertical video. Videos up to 3 minutes open in a trim editor; for longer videos, tap Edit into a Short to trim to 3 minutes or less.

YouTube also reminds creators that using copyright-protected material can lead to a Content ID claim, and a valid takedown notice can remove the Short and give you a copyright strike.

Shorts over one minute: Content ID and music

Longer Shorts come with one important rule. YouTube Help says any Short over one minute with an active Content ID claim of any type, including manual claims, is blocked globally: it won’t play, won’t be recommended and can’t earn money. There’s no penalty to your channel, and you can remove the claimed content to unblock it (Understand three-minute YouTube Shorts).

  • Use music from the Shorts Audio Library. Most songs can be used for up to 90 seconds in a 3-minute Short, but some are limited to 60 or 30 seconds.
  • Royalty-free music from the YouTube Audio Library won’t receive a Content ID claim, according to the same article.
  • Keep Shorts that use popular music under one minute unless you’re sure the track is cleared for the full length.

Common Shorts size mistakes

  • Uploading 16:9 and expecting a Short. A horizontal video is long-form, whatever the length or title.
  • Text at the bottom of the frame, where the title and channel name cover it.
  • Letterboxing a horizontal clip inside a 9:16 frame with big black bars. Crop and reframe instead.
  • Re-uploading a TikTok or Reel with a watermark. Export the clean file from your editor.
  • Exporting at a low bitrate, which makes fast motion blocky. Use your editor’s high-quality preset.
  • A 16:9 custom thumbnail on a vertical Short; YouTube may replace it on key surfaces.

Export settings checklist

  • 9:16 vertical, 1080 × 1920 px (or 1:1 square, 1080 × 1080 px).
  • Up to 3 minutes; under 1 minute if you use claimed music.
  • Same frame rate as recorded; MP4, H.264, AAC.
  • Captions and key text in the centre, clear of the bottom and right edges.
  • A strong first second: the hook decides whether people keep watching.
  • Vertical 9:16 custom thumbnail (2160 × 3840 px) if your account is verified.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is a YouTube Short?

YouTube Help says a Short must be square or vertical and up to 3 minutes long. For a full-screen vertical Short, export at 1080 × 1920 px (9:16); for square, 1080 × 1080 px. YouTube doesn’t publish a single required pixel size.

What is the best resolution for YouTube Shorts?

1080p. YouTube Help says you can upload Shorts with a maximum resolution of 1080p, so 1080 × 1920 px is the practical choice for vertical Shorts.

How long can a YouTube Short be?

Up to 3 minutes. Square or vertical videos up to three minutes uploaded on or after 15 October 2024 are categorised as Shorts.

Can a YouTube Short be horizontal?

No. Horizontal (for example 16:9) videos are treated as long-form videos. YouTube says to use a wider aspect ratio if you don’t want a video classified as a Short.

What size is a YouTube Shorts thumbnail?

YouTube recommends 2160 × 3840 px with a 9:16 aspect ratio and a minimum height of 640 px. Custom Shorts thumbnails can only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer, and your account must be verified.

Do I need #Shorts in the title?

No. YouTube categorises Shorts by aspect ratio and length, not by hashtag.

Why is my 2-minute Short blocked?

YouTube blocks Shorts over one minute that have an active Content ID claim. Remove the claimed content or use music from the YouTube Audio Library to unblock it.

Where is the safe zone on a YouTube Short?

YouTube doesn’t publish one. We suggest keeping text out of the bottom ~20% and right ~15% of a 1080 × 1920 frame, where the title and buttons appear, and checking on a phone before publishing.
