How to Grow on YouTube Shorts: A Practical Plan

Hooks, titles, posting rhythm, related videos and the analytics that matter, based on YouTube’s own Help Center. No fake benchmarks.

In short: pick one audience and a few repeatable formats, win the first seconds so viewers choose to watch instead of swiping, write specific titles, post on a schedule you can keep, link Shorts to your longer videos with the related video feature, and check Shown in feed and How many chose to view in YouTube Studio every week. Keep content original and never buy views or subscribers.

How Shorts growth actually works

YouTube Shorts are vertical videos of up to 3 minutes (YouTube Help: Upload YouTube Shorts). Most Shorts views come from people scrolling the Shorts Feed, where each video gets a moment to earn attention before the viewer swipes. YouTube’s page on getting started with Shorts says viewers can also find Shorts in search results, on the YouTube homepage, on your channel page, in Subscriptions and in notifications.

So growth on Shorts comes down to three things you control:

  1. Getting viewers to stay instead of swiping away in the first seconds.
  2. Publishing consistently, so each new Short is another chance to be shown.
  3. Turning viewers into subscribers and long-form viewers, so growth compounds.

This guide is practical and based on YouTube Help. We don’t quote “average Shorts views” or promised growth rates, because there is no reliable public benchmark for every niche. Your YouTube Studio analytics are the numbers that count.

Step 1: Pick a lane viewers can recognise

Channels grow faster when a viewer can predict what the next Short will be. Choose one audience and two or three repeatable formats, for example:

  • Quick how-tos: “3 ways to…”, one tip per Short.
  • Myth vs fact in your niche.
  • Before and after for visual work such as renovations, design, fitness or food.
  • Answers to real comments and customer questions.
  • Series with a number in the title, so people come back for the next part.

Our free Reels and Shorts ideas generator gives hooks and formats by niche that you can adapt for Shorts.

Step 2: Win the first seconds

YouTube Studio measures how many viewers stay rather than swipe. Its Shorts analytics show Shown in feed (how many times your Shorts appeared in the Shorts Feed) and How many chose to view (the percentage of times viewers viewed your Shorts versus swiped away), per YouTube’s Content tab analytics tips for Shorts. YouTube’s content performance page calls the related metric Stayed to watch (YouTube Help).

Practical ways to improve it:

  • Start with the payoff or the question, not a logo or greeting.
  • Put movement or a change in the first second.
  • Add short on-screen text that states the topic, kept clear of the player buttons.
  • Cut pauses. Every second should earn the next.
  • End cleanly, or loop back to the start so a replay feels natural.

The YouTube app also has a Get feedback option at upload that analyses your Short’s hook and pacing, according to the Shorts getting-started page. Use it as a second opinion before you publish.

Step 3: Titles, length and settings

Titles matter for search and for the moment someone decides to keep watching. In the YouTube app you can add a title of up to 100 characters (YouTube Help). Make it specific: “Fix a leaking tap in 60 seconds” beats “DIY hack!!”. Our free YouTube title generator suggests options to edit.

  • Length: Shorts can be up to 3 minutes, but only use the time the idea needs. Shorter often feels tighter.
  • Format: square or vertical aspect ratio; YouTube says uploads from the app can be up to 1080p.
  • Audience setting: choose correctly whether the Short is made for kids, as YouTube requires.
  • Music: YouTube’s Shorts monetization policies say Shorts over one minute with claimed content (such as some music) are blocked, so check audio rights for longer Shorts.

Custom Shorts thumbnails (9:16, added in YouTube Studio on a computer) are covered in our YouTube thumbnail size guide.

Step 4: Post consistently on a schedule you can keep

YouTube’s own Shorts upload tips say that after your first upload you should try sticking to a posting schedule you can maintain, and that consistency is key. It doesn’t publish an ideal number per week, so pick a rhythm you can sustain for months, such as three Shorts a week, and batch-film them.

A simple weekly system:

  1. Monday: pick topics from comments, search terms and your best performers.
  2. Tuesday: film several Shorts in one session.
  3. Wednesday: edit and write titles.
  4. Through the week: schedule and publish, then reply to comments.

Step 5: Connect Shorts to the rest of your channel

Shorts work best as the top of a funnel. Use YouTube’s tools to move viewers deeper:

  • Related video: YouTube lets you add a related video to your Shorts, which shows as a clickable link below your channel handle in the Shorts player. It needs advanced feature access, and the linked video must be public or unlisted.
  • Clips from long videos: the Clips and Shorts tool in YouTube Studio cuts segments from your long videos into Shorts, and automatically adds the source as the related video (unless the Short is private, unlisted or made for kids).
  • Links: YouTube says URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments are not clickable, to reduce spam (Sharing links with your audiences). Use the related video link and your channel profile links instead.

Make sure your channel page is ready for visitors: clear banner, short description and playlists that group your Shorts series.

Turning viewers into subscribers is covered in how to get more YouTube subscribers.

Between uploads, keep subscribers engaged with polls and updates; our YouTube posts guide shows how.

Step 6: Read your analytics every week

In YouTube Studio, open Analytics, then the Content tab and the Shorts view. Check:

MetricWhat to do with it
Shown in feedIf low, YouTube is showing the Short to few people; look at topic and consistency
How many chose to view / Stayed to watchIf low, rework the first seconds and the title
Engaged views and average percentage viewedShows whether people stay to the end
Subscribers gainedWhich Shorts turn viewers into subscribers
How viewers find your ShortsShorts Feed, search, channel pages or external sources

Metric names follow YouTube Help at the time of writing. Since 31 March 2025, YouTube counts a Shorts view each time a Short starts or replays, and keeps the earlier metric as “Engaged views” (YouTube Help).

Compare each Short with your own recent ones, not with other channels. Make more of what works, and test one change at a time.

Step 7: Stay original and avoid shortcuts

Two things can quietly cap a Shorts channel:

  • Unoriginal content. YouTube’s Shorts monetization policies treat unedited clips from films or TV, re-uploads of other creators’ content and compilations with no original content added as ineligible views. Even if you aren’t monetized yet, build the habit of original content now.
  • Fake engagement. Buying views, subscribers or likes, or using bots, breaks YouTube’s fake engagement policy. YouTube’s monetization rules also exclude artificial views from bots.

When you are ready to earn, read our guides on how Shorts monetization works and the YouTube Partner Program requirements, and estimate potential income with our YouTube money calculator (estimates only).

Common Shorts mistakes to avoid

  • Slow openings. Intros, logos and “hey guys” give viewers a reason to swipe.
  • Horizontal footage with black bars. Shorts must be square or vertical; vertical fills the screen.
  • Re-uploading TikToks with watermarks or other people’s clips. It looks recycled and other creators’ content is ineligible for Shorts monetization.
  • Vague titles. “Wait for it” tells search nothing. Say what the Short is about.
  • Posting in bursts. Ten Shorts in a day followed by a month of silence is harder to sustain than a steady rhythm.
  • Never linking anywhere. Without a related video or channel journey, a viral Short can bring views but few subscribers.
  • Judging too early. Shorts can pick up views days after publishing; compare performance over a consistent period.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can a YouTube Short be?

YouTube Help says Shorts can be up to 3 minutes long, with a square or vertical aspect ratio.

How often should I post Shorts?

YouTube doesn’t publish an ideal number. Its upload tips say to stick to a posting schedule you can maintain, because consistency is key.

Can I put links in YouTube Shorts?

URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments are not clickable. You can add a related video from your channel, which appears as a clickable link in the Shorts player, if you have advanced feature access.

What does “How many chose to view” mean?

It is the percentage of times viewers viewed your Shorts versus swiping away in the Shorts Feed, shown in YouTube Studio’s Shorts analytics.

Do Shorts help long-form videos?

They can, if you link them. Use related videos and the Clips and Shorts tool to send interested viewers to your longer videos.

Should I buy views to kick-start a new channel?

No. Buying views or subscribers breaks YouTube’s fake engagement policy, and YouTube excludes artificial views from Shorts monetization.

Do hashtags help YouTube Shorts?

YouTube shows hashtags as clickable in Shorts descriptions and comments, which can help viewers find related content. A clear, specific title and a strong opening matter more.
