YouTube Posts: The Complete Guide

How YouTube posts work, the limits YouTube publishes for images, polls and quizzes, scheduling, and what to post between uploads.

In short: YouTube posts (formerly the Community tab) let you share text, up to 10 images, GIFs, videos, polls and quizzes. Create one from Create > Create post. Posts aren’t available on supervised accounts, made for kids channels or currently in Germany. You can schedule posts, and they follow the Community Guidelines like videos do.

Posts (once called the Community tab) let you share text, images, GIFs, videos, polls and quizzes with your audience between uploads (Learn about posts).

How to create a post

  1. Sign in to YouTube on a computer.
  2. At the top of the page, select Create > Create post.
  3. Type a message for a text post, or choose video, poll, quiz or image from the menu below the box.
  4. Select Post.

The same Help article has separate steps for the Android and iPhone apps. If you see a “limit reached” message, YouTube says to try again in 24 hours (Create a post).

Types of posts and their limits

  • Text: on its own or with a video, image or GIF. Text posts can’t be combined with polls.
  • Image and GIF: up to 10 images, 16 MB each, JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP. YouTube suggests 1:1 because that’s how images show in the feed. In the app you can add music, text, stickers and filters.
  • Video: search for a video, paste a URL or pick one of your own. Sharing another creator’s video may notify them.
  • Poll: text or image poll with up to 4 options.
  • Quiz: up to 4 answers and one correct answer, with an optional explanation.
  • Playlist: paste a playlist URL into the text box.
  • Mentions: type @ and a channel’s handle; the channel may be notified.

Who can create posts

YouTube Help lists only a few exclusions: posts aren’t available on supervised accounts, on channels set as made for kids (the Posts tab is then visible only to you and you can’t create new posts) and currently in Germany. Access can also depend on your channel role (Learn about posts).

If you don’t see the option, check your feature eligibility in YouTube Studio under Settings > Channel > Feature eligibility (Get access to intermediate and advanced features). Channels that break the Community Guidelines can lose access to features, including posts.

Scheduling, comments and the Posts shelf

  • Schedule: create the post, click the down arrow next to Post, choose Schedule post, then pick the date, time and time zone. Scheduled posts sit in the “Scheduled” section of the Posts tab (Create a post).
  • Expired posts move to an “Archived” section only you can see.
  • Comments: if comments are off, check your channel’s default comment settings. A post that shares a video follows that video’s comment settings (Learn about posts).
  • Posts shelf: it sits at the bottom of your Home tab by default. Move or remove it in YouTube Studio under Customization > Home tab > Layout.

What to post: ideas that work for businesses

  • Polls to choose your next video. Viewers who vote often come back to watch.
  • Behind-the-scenes photos from a shoot, with a line about what’s coming.
  • Quizzes that test something you taught in a recent video, linking back to it.
  • Announce uploads and live streams a day ahead with a scheduled post.
  • Share a Short or older video that’s relevant again.
  • Answer a common question in a short text post.

These are our suggestions. Plan them alongside uploads with our free content calendar generator.

Posts and the Community Guidelines

Posts follow the same rules as videos. YouTube Help says a post that violates the Community Guidelines may be removed and a strike may be applied to the channel, and images must follow the guidelines too (Learn about posts). Read how warnings and strikes work in our YouTube strikes guide.

Posts checklist

  • Channel isn’t made for kids, and the account isn’t supervised.
  • Square (1:1) images under 16 MB.
  • Polls and quizzes with short, clear options.
  • Scheduled posts for upload days and live streams.
  • Posts shelf placed where visitors will see it.
  • Every post follows the Community Guidelines.

YouTube Help says posts aren’t available on supervised accounts, on channels set as made for kids, or currently in Germany. Access can also depend on your channel role.

How many images can I add to a YouTube post?

Up to 10 images, each up to 16 MB, as JPG, PNG, GIF or WEBP.

Yes. YouTube limits how many posts a channel can create in 24 hours but doesn’t publish the number. If you see “limit reached”, try again in 24 hours.

Yes. YouTube says posts that violate the Community Guidelines may be removed and a strike may be applied to the channel.
