How to Add Chapters to YouTube Videos
The three timestamp rules from YouTube Help, why chapters sometimes don’t appear and how to write chapter titles viewers click.
In short: in YouTube Studio, add a list of timestamps and titles to the video description. The first must be 00:00, you need at least three in ascending order, and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long. Your own chapters override automatic chapters. Chapters won’t show if the channel has active strikes.

How to add chapters, step by step
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- From the left menu, select Content and click the video.
- In the Description, add a list of timestamps and titles, one per line.
- Start the first line with 00:00, list at least three timestamps in ascending order and keep every chapter at least 10 seconds long.
- Click Save.
That’s all YouTube needs (Video chapters). A simple list looks like this:
00:00 Intro
00:42 What you need
02:15 Step 1: Mix the dough
05:30 Step 2: Shape and proof
09:05 Baking and results
Want this done for you? Paste your timestamps into our free YouTube chapters generator; it checks all three rules and gives you a list to paste.
Why your chapters aren’t showing
If the progress bar doesn’t split into chapters after you save, check these in order:
- The first timestamp isn’t 00:00. Starting at 0:05 or with “Intro 0:00” on a later line breaks the list.
- Fewer than three timestamps. Two isn’t enough.
- A chapter is shorter than 10 seconds, including the last one (the gap between the final timestamp and the end of the video). Our suggestion: check the last chapter too.
- Timestamps out of order or duplicated.
- Active strikes on the channel. YouTube says chapters won’t be available while there are active strikes; see our YouTube strikes guide.
- Content that may be inappropriate for some viewers, which YouTube also lists as a reason.
- No access yet. YouTube Help says to apply for advanced features if chapters aren’t available to you (advanced features).
Automatic chapters: keep or turn off?
YouTube can create automatic chapters. In YouTube Studio, open the video, click Show more and look under Automatic chapters; “Allow automatic chapters” is checked by default for new uploads (Video chapters).
- Adding your own timestamps overrides automatic chapters for that video.
- Not every video is eligible, and not every eligible video gets automatic chapters.
- To switch them off for future uploads: Settings > Upload defaults > Advanced settings, then uncheck “Allow automatic chapters (when available and eligible)”.
Our view: write your own. You choose the words viewers see, and you can use the terms people search for.
Writing chapter titles people click
- Short and specific: “Shaping the loaf” beats “Part 3”.
- Use the viewer’s words: the phrase they’d type into search.
- Front-load the useful part: titles can be cut off on small screens.
- Mark the answer: if one chapter answers the title’s question, say so (“Final result”).
- Skip filler chapters under the 10-second minimum; merge them.
These are our suggestions; YouTube Help only sets the format rules above.
Chapters for Shorts, live streams and long videos
- Long videos (over an hour): write timestamps as h:mm:ss, for example 1:05:30. Our generator handles both formats.
- Live stream replays: add timestamps to the replay’s description once it has finished processing.
- Shorts: at up to 3 minutes, most Shorts don’t need chapters. See the YouTube Shorts size guide for format rules.
Chapter checklist
- First line starts with 00:00.
- At least three chapters, in ascending order.
- Every chapter at least 10 seconds long, including the last.
- Clear, searchable titles.
- No active strikes on the channel.
- The rest of the description is useful too: build it with the YouTube description generator.
Next steps: point viewers to your next video with end screens and cards, and add a few accurate tags with the YouTube tag generator.

Why are my YouTube chapters not showing?
The most common causes are a first timestamp that isn’t 00:00, fewer than three timestamps, a chapter shorter than 10 seconds or timestamps out of order. YouTube also says chapters aren’t available if the channel has active strikes or the content may be inappropriate for some viewers.
How many chapters does a YouTube video need?
At least three, according to YouTube Help. YouTube doesn’t set a maximum.
What is the minimum length of a YouTube chapter?
10 seconds.

YouTube Help says the first timestamp should start with 00:00. Our generator outputs 00:00 for videos under an hour.
