Enter your video topic and title to get a short list of relevant tags, including common misspellings, ready to paste into YouTube Studio. Based on what YouTube Help says tags are for.
Enter your main topic, title and any extra keywords or common misspellings. The generator suggests relevant tags, selects up to 15 within an estimated 500 characters, and gives you a comma-separated list to paste into the Tags field in YouTube Studio. YouTube Help says the title, thumbnail and description matter more than tags, and that tags help most when a topic is commonly misspelled.

What YouTube says about tags
YouTube Help is clear that tags are a small part of discovery (Add tags to your YouTube videos):
- Your video’s title, thumbnail and description are more important pieces of metadata for discovery.
- Tags can be useful if your content is commonly misspelled. Otherwise, they play a minimal role.
- Adding excessive tags to your video description is against YouTube’s policies on spam, deceptive practices and scams.
So spend most of your time on the title, thumbnail and description, then add a few accurate tags in a minute or two. That is what this tool is for.
How to use the YouTube tag generator
- Enter the main topic in the words a viewer would type into search.
- Add your title and any other keywords you use in the video.
- Add common misspellings of names, brands or words in your topic. This is the case YouTube says tags help with most.
- Pick the video type to get matching variations (tutorial, review, tips and so on).
- Remove anything that isn’t accurate, copy the list and paste it into Tags in YouTube Studio.
YouTube tag rules and limits
| Item | What we know | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Role in discovery | Minimal; title, thumbnail and description matter more | Add tags to your YouTube videos |
| When tags help | When your content is commonly misspelled | Add tags to your YouTube videos |
| Tags in the description | Excessive tags in the description go against spam policies | YouTube Help, Spam policy |
| Where to add them | YouTube Studio: Details > Show more (new uploads) or Content > video > Show more | YouTube Help |
| Total length | About 500 characters is commonly reported for the tags box; not stated in YouTube Help | Commonly reported |
| Hashtags | Different from tags; separate rules (no spaces, more than 60 and all are ignored) | Hashtags on YouTube |
What makes a good set of tags
- Accurate: every tag describes what is actually in the video. Misleading metadata breaks YouTube’s spam policy.
- Specific first: the main topic, then a few close variations (“sourdough bread for beginners”).
- Misspellings and alternatives: “sour dough”, a brand name spelled two ways, or the local name for a dish.
- Short: a handful of good tags beats 40 loose ones.
- Your channel name can help viewers who search for it find your other videos.
Example
For a tutorial titled “How to Make Sourdough Bread at Home”, the default example above gives: sourdough bread, sourdough starter, no knead bread, sour dough, how to make sourdough bread at home, sourdough bread tutorial, sourdough bread for beginners, sourdough bread step by step and easy sourdough bread. That is about 220 characters, well under the commonly reported limit.
Common tag mistakes
- Copying a competitor’s tags that don’t describe your video.
- Pasting a keyword list into the description. YouTube says this goes against its policies.
- Tagging trending topics that aren’t in the video.
- Spending an hour on tags and five minutes on the title and thumbnail. YouTube says the title, thumbnail and description matter more.

YouTube Tag Generator FAQ
Do YouTube tags still matter?
A little. YouTube Help says your title, thumbnail and description are more important for discovery, and that tags are useful mainly if your topic is commonly misspelled. Otherwise, tags play a minimal role.
How many tags should I add to a YouTube video?
YouTube doesn’t give a number. Because tags play a minimal role, a handful of accurate ones (the main topic, a few close variations and common misspellings) is enough. This tool selects up to 15 by default.
What is the character limit for YouTube tags?
YouTube Help doesn’t state it. The tags box in YouTube Studio is commonly reported to allow about 500 characters in total, with tags that contain spaces counting a little extra. The tool shows an estimate so you stay well under it.
Can I put tags in my video description?
Not as a list. YouTube Help says adding excessive tags to your video description is against its policies on spam, deceptive practices and scams. Write normal sentences in the description and add tags in the Tags field.
Are tags the same as hashtags?
No. Tags are hidden keywords in the Tags field in YouTube Studio. Hashtags (#like_this) appear in the title or description and link to a hashtag page. YouTube has separate rules for hashtags.
Where do I add tags in YouTube Studio?
When uploading, open the Details step, click Show more and add your tags. For a video you’ve already uploaded, go to Content, select the video, click Show more and add tags.
Is anything I type saved?
No. Tags are generated in your browser. Nothing is sent to us or stored.
