YouTube Description Generator

Fill in what your video covers, your chapters, links and hashtags. Get a clean description in the right order, with chapter and hashtag checks based on YouTube Help.

Enter your video’s title, main keyword and a short summary, then paste your chapters, links and hashtags. The generator puts them in a clear order (summary, call to action, chapters, links, about the channel, hashtags), checks that chapters start at 00:00 with at least three timestamps 10 seconds or more apart, warns about hashtag and keyword overuse, and counts against YouTube’s 5,000-character limit.

The words people would search for.

Two or three sentences. These are the first lines viewers see.

Separate with commas; spaces inside a hashtag are removed.

The description updates as you type.

Edit it here before you copy. Paste it into Description in YouTube Studio.

How to use the YouTube description generator

  1. Write the opening first. Two or three sentences on what viewers will learn or see, using the words in your title. Viewers see the start of the description before they expand it.
  2. Paste your chapters. One per line, a timestamp then a title. The checker applies YouTube’s chapter rules as you type.
  3. Add links with labels. “Free recipe: https://…” is clearer than a bare link.
  4. Pick a call to action and add a few hashtags. One request is enough.
  5. Edit, copy and paste. Fix any warnings, copy the description and paste it into Description in YouTube Studio.

YouTube description rules (from YouTube Help)

LinksClickable links in long-form descriptions are an advanced feature (Feature access); Shorts description links aren’t clickable
CorrectionsAdd “Correction:” or “Corrections:” after any chapters, then the timestamp and explanation on a separate line (Edit video settings)
KeywordsFeature one or two main words in the title and description (Tips for descriptions); lists of tags or repeated sentences are prohibited

A description structure that works

  1. Opening (1 to 3 sentences): what the video covers and who it’s for, with your main keyword written naturally.
  2. Call to action: subscribe, comment, or check a link. Pick one.
  3. Chapters: make long videos easy to skim and rewatch.
  4. Links: resources mentioned in the video, your website, related videos or playlists.
  5. About the channel: one line on what you post and when.
  6. Hashtags: a few relevant ones at the end.

Add disclosures where they apply, such as affiliate links or sponsorships, near the top and in plain words.

Example

For a video titled “How to Make Sourdough Bread at Home”, the default example above opens with “Learn how to make sourdough bread at home with simple tools…”, asks viewers to subscribe, lists five chapters from 00:00, adds two labelled links and ends with #sourdough #breadbaking #homebaking. It uses about 420 of the 5,000 characters, leaving plenty of room for more detail if it helps viewers.

Common description mistakes

  • Chapters that don’t show: the first timestamp isn’t 00:00, there are fewer than three, or one chapter is under 10 seconds.
  • Keyword stuffing: a paragraph of keywords at the end. YouTube treats it as misleading metadata.
  • Dozens of hashtags: they become less relevant, and over 60 means all are ignored.
  • Bare links with no context: viewers don’t know what they are clicking.
  • Copy-paste descriptions: the same text on every video tells viewers nothing about this one.

FAQ

YouTube Description Generator FAQ

How long can a YouTube description be?

Up to 5,000 characters, according to YouTube Help. Descriptions also can’t include invalid characters. The generator counts as you type and warns you if you go over.

How do I add chapters to a YouTube video?

Add a list of timestamps and titles to the description. YouTube Help says the first timestamp must be 00:00, you need at least three timestamps in ascending order, and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long. If you don’t have access to chapters yet, YouTube says to apply for advanced features.

How many hashtags should I put in a YouTube description?

A few relevant ones. YouTube shows up to three hashtags it considers most engaging by your title, and if a video has more than 60 hashtags, YouTube ignores all of them. Hashtags can’t contain spaces.

Why aren’t the links in my description clickable?

In long-form videos, clickable links in the description are an advanced feature, so your channel needs advanced features access. In Shorts, description links aren’t clickable; use the Related video setting to send viewers to a long video.

What should go in the first lines of a description?

One or two sentences that say what the video is about, using the main words people search for. YouTube’s tips recommend featuring one or two main keywords prominently in both the title and the description.

Can I put keywords in a list at the end of the description?

No. YouTube’s hashtag policy says adding ordinary descriptive tags or repetitive sentences in the description is prohibited and can get the video removed or penalized. Write normal sentences instead.

Is anything I type saved?

No. The description is built in your browser. Nothing is sent to us or stored.
