Why businesses look at India for social media work
Businesses in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and the Gulf outsource creative and marketing work to India for three practical reasons: cost (lower operating costs let providers offer more output per dollar), English-language work (many Indian teams work in English every day) and time-zone shift, which can turn your evening request into work that is ready by your morning.
It is not right for everyone. The difference in time zone that helps with overnight turnaround also makes live calls harder, a remote team cannot film your shop floor, and cultural nuance has to be learnt rather than assumed. The rest of this guide covers both sides so you can decide with your eyes open.
We are an India-based provider, so we have an interest in this decision. We have tried to keep this guide factual and to list the downsides as clearly as the benefits.
The pros
- More output for the budget. Compare finished assets per month, not hourly rates; that is where the difference shows.
- Overnight progress. Feedback you send at the end of your working day can be actioned during India's working day.
- A full team rather than one person, so design, video editing and copy are covered under one fee.
- Publishing on your local schedule. Posts are scheduled in your audience's time zone, so the team's location does not affect when followers see them.
- USD pricing that is easy to compare across countries.
The cons, and how to handle them
- Little or no live overlap with the Americas. India Standard Time (UTC+5:30) has no daylight saving, so the gap with North America changes twice a year. Agree call times that suit both sides and use written approvals for everything else.
- No one on site. Footage of your venue, products or team must come from you or a local shooter. A good provider tells you what kinds of clips work best.
- Local nuance. Slang, humour, holidays and spelling (color or colour) need a style guide and your review, especially in the first month.
- Reactive posts are slower. If a news moment happens during your afternoon, it may be night in India. Keep someone in-house for truly live content.
- Payments and fees. International card or PayPal payments can carry conversion fees; agree the currency upfront.
- Data protection. Sharing customer data abroad has legal implications (see below).
Working-hours overlap, computed
The table converts a 9:00–17:00 working day in each city into India Standard Time, and shows how many hours overlap with an Indian office day of 9:00–18:00 IST. January and July dates are used to capture daylight-saving changes.
| Client city | Client 9:00–17:00 in IST (15 Jan 2027) | Client 9:00–17:00 in IST (15 Jul 2027) | Overlap with IST 9:00–18:00 (Jan / Jul) |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York (ET) | 19:30–03:30 | 18:30–02:30 | 0 h / 0 h |
| Chicago (CT) | 20:30–04:30 | 19:30–03:30 | 0 h / 0 h |
| Los Angeles (PT) | 22:30–06:30 | 21:30–05:30 | 0 h / 0 h |
| Toronto (ET) | 19:30–03:30 | 18:30–02:30 | 0 h / 0 h |
| London (UK) | 14:30–22:30 | 13:30–21:30 | 3.5 h / 4.5 h |
| Dubai (GST) | 10:30–18:30 | 10:30–18:30 | 7.5 h / 7.5 h |
| Sydney (AET) | 03:30–11:30 | 04:30–12:30 | 2.5 h / 3.5 h |
| Perth (AWST) | 06:30–14:30 | 06:30–14:30 | 5.5 h / 5.5 h |
Computed with the IANA time zone database for the dates shown. A zero means there is no overlap within standard office hours, so calls are scheduled at the edge of one side's day.
How the process usually works
- Discovery call to agree goals, platforms and the monthly plan.
- Access through Meta Business Suite partner access, LinkedIn page admin roles and YouTube channel permissions. Never share passwords.
- Brand brief: tone of voice, words to avoid, spelling, competitors, examples you like and do not like.
- Content calendar for the month, shared in advance for approval.
- Production: design, editing and captions; you supply on-location footage where needed.
- Approval round in writing, with agreed turnaround times.
- Scheduling in your audience's time zone.
- Monthly review of results and changes for the next month.
Contracts, data protection and payment
- Put scope in writing: platforms, asset counts by format, revisions, response times and notice period.
- Ownership: the contract should state that you own the accounts, content and brand files.
- UK and EU businesses: if the provider will handle personal data (for example customer messages), that may count as an international transfer under UK GDPR; see the International transfers (UK GDPR guidance) guidance. Limit access to what is needed.
- India's data protection law: the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 applies to processing in India; the MeitY data protection framework page has the official text and rules.
- Currency: agree the billing currency. We bill in USD; your bank or PayPal sets the conversion rate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is outsourcing social media to India safe?
It can be, if you use role-based access instead of passwords, keep ownership of your accounts, sign clear terms and limit any personal data shared to what the work needs.
How do approvals work across time zones?
In writing. You review the calendar and content in a shared document or tool; comments left in your evening are usually actioned during India's working day.
Will posts go out at the right time for my audience?
Yes. Posts are scheduled in your audience's local time zone, regardless of where the team is.
Does India use daylight saving time?
No. India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 all year, so the time difference with the US, UK, Canada and parts of Australia changes when those countries change their clocks.
What currency will I pay in?
We bill in USD. Your card provider, bank or PayPal converts from your local currency at their rate.
